Developing explanations of observed phenomenon is one of the major functions of research in Information Systems (IS). But what is an explanation? What types of explanation can IS research provide and what do they mean? The objectives of this research are to develop a shared language, to increase understanding of the meaning of research results and to stimulate discussion of explanation in Information Systems research. Four years of articles published in two top-ranked IS journals over a period of ten years were sampled based on four explanation types defined in modern philosophy: covering-law, statistical-relevance, pragmatic and functional. Explanation types, sub …

A few days ago, I received an e-mail from LinkedIn letting me know that the social network will discontinue its InMaps network visualization service on September 1, 2014. According to their e-mail, LinkedIn is retiring InMaps "so we can focus on bringing you even better ways to visualize your professional network." Okay, so there will be a successor to InMaps, but will this new network visualization service be available to all LinkedIn users for free like LinkedIn InMaps are?

Much prior research has examined the dearth of women in the IT industry. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of women in IT within the context of information security and assurance. This paper describes results from a study of a relatively new career path to see if there are female-friendly opportunities that have not existed in previous IT career paths. Research methodology focuses on a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with women who are self-described information security professionals. A primary goal of the study is to understand the perceptions of women in information security and determine …

Until recently, teaching a translation technology course required that either the student or the institution make a substantial financial investment in software licenses and expensive hardware. Today, cloud-based technology lets institutions add basic localization courses to their curriculum without investing heavily in infrastructure first.

[Excerpt] Social mobility studies begin with the assumption that movement from any blue-collar job to any white-collar job represents unmitigated betterment of an individual's or generation's social status. These studies represent this movement across the collar line in a linear fashion, following the movement from fathers' occupations to sons'. This is the basic method that Jiirgen Kocka suggested historians could use to illuminate "the relevant lines of distinction, tension and conflict segmenting and dividing the emerging working class internally" and the "outer boundary" of that working class, the visibility and rigidity of "the distinction between workers and those who own …

Long May They Run, an article in Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors Magazine about the history and culture of the Maine sardine industry. In 2010, the "Year of the Sardine" and the closure of the Stinson sardine plant, the last in the United States, prompted an exploration of why writers, painters, and other artists are so drawn to this humble fish that once supported so many of Maine's coastal communities. In 2010, the Stinson Sardine Cannery in Prospect Harbor, Maine, the last sardine cannery in the United States, closed. As historians and photographers rushed in to document the loss, poets …

While the United Nations Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a very positive development in the horizon of management education over the last decade, there are still many significant challenges for engaging the mind of the manager in ways that will foster the values of PRME and the UN Global Compact. Responsible management education must address three foundational challenges in business education if it is to actualize the aspirations of PRME: 1) it must confront the cognitional myth that knowing is like looking, 2) it must move beyond mere analysis to systems thinking, and 3) it must transition from …
