A Descriptive Analysis Of Layoffs In Large U.S. Firms Using Archival Data Over Three Decades And Interviews With Senior Managers, Kevin F. Hallock
A Descriptive Analysis Of Layoffs In Large U.S. Firms Using Archival Data Over Three Decades And Interviews With Senior Managers, Kevin F. Hallock
Kevin F Hallock
This paper uses data on over 4,600 layoff announcements in the U.S., covering each firm that ever existed in the Fortune 500 between 1970 and 2000, along with 40 interviews of senior managers in 2001 and 2002 to describe layoffs in large U.S. firms over this period. In order to motivate further work in the area, I investigate six main issues related to layoffs: timing of layoffs, reasons for layoffs, the actual execution of layoffs, international workers, labor unions, and the types of workers by occupation and compensation categories. The paper draws on literature from many fields to help further …

Silver Screen Tarnishes Unions, Ken Margolies
Ken Margolies
[Excerpt] Organizing a film festival of pro-labor Hollywood films would be rather difficult. When unions do appear, they are often part of the subplot or the background for the main story line.

Intensified Regulatory Scrutiny And Bank Distress In New York City During The Great Depression,” With Patrick Van Horn, Gary Richardson
Intensified Regulatory Scrutiny And Bank Distress In New York City During The Great Depression,” With Patrick Van Horn, Gary Richardson
Gary Richardson
Bank distress peaked in New York City, at the center of the United States money market, in July and August 1931, when the banking crisis peaked in Germany and before Britain abandoned the gold standard. This article tests competing theories about the causes of New York’s banking crisis. The cause appears to have been intensified regulatory scrutiny, which was a delayed reaction to the failure of the Bank of United States, rather than the exposure of money center banks to events overseas.

State Violence And The Writer: Towards The Dialectics Of Intellectual Militancy In Transcending Postcolonial Nigerian Contradictions., Uzoechi Nwagbara
State Violence And The Writer: Towards The Dialectics Of Intellectual Militancy In Transcending Postcolonial Nigerian Contradictions., Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The hub of this paper is how State violence manifests in the Nigerian novel, particularly in the context of the reprehensible postcolonial order that impinges on nation-building. By definition, State violence means forceful, coercive and high-handed appropriation of the apparatuses of the State by the ruling class for political and selfish ends, which results in physical, psychological and ethical harm or damage. In circumventing the contradictions posed by this inept practice, intellectual militancy is the option to bring change in Nigeria as illustrated by Nigerian writers (novelists) in their works. Intellectual militancy amounts to revolutionary aesthetics, political education and intellectual …

Aesthetics Of Resistance And Sustainability: Tanure Ojaide And The Niger Delta Question, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Aesthetics Of Resistance And Sustainability: Tanure Ojaide And The Niger Delta Question, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The paper endeavours to establish the centrality of ecocriticism in the poetry of Tanure Ojaide. It will be argued in this paper that Ojaide’s poetry negates ecological imperialism, a capitalist practice that destroys the periphery’s natural world. In Ojaide’s poetics, there is an illustration of the nature and strategies he employs to actualise resistance literature – essentially premised on ecocritical literature. Ecocritical literature or ecocriticism is a form of literary criticism that considers the nature of the relationship existing between literature and the natural environment. Ojaide’s raison d'être for this artistic preoccupation is simple: the environmental and ecological predation in …
"Athleticated" Versus Educated: A Qualitative Investigation Of Campus Perceptions, Recruiting And African American Male Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison
"Athleticated" Versus Educated: A Qualitative Investigation Of Campus Perceptions, Recruiting And African American Male Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative investigation of student narratives (N= 167) about the contemporary issue of recruiting high-profile African American male student-athletes. Participants were asked to view a scene on recruiting from the film, The Program (1994). Participants were then presented with questions regarding a recruiting trip by an African American football player to a traditionally white campus. Findings indicate that both Black and White students perceived the African American male student-athletes in the film scene to be more "athleticated" than educated. They were also perceived as stereotypical sex-objects. "When athletes (especially male) show up …
A Response To Bruni And Sugden, Julie A. Nelson
A Response To Bruni And Sugden, Julie A. Nelson
Julie A. Nelson
An article by Luigino Bruni and Robert Sugden published in this journal argues that market relations contain elements of what they call ‘fraternity’. This Response demonstrates that my own views on interpersonal relations and markets – which originated in the feminist analysis of caring labour – are far closer to Bruni and Sugden's than they acknowledge in their article, and goes on to discuss additional important dimensions of sociality that they neglect.
A Day In The Life Of A Male College Athlete: A Public Perception And Qualitative Campus Investigation, Keith Harrison
A Day In The Life Of A Male College Athlete: A Public Perception And Qualitative Campus Investigation, Keith Harrison
Dr. C. Keith Harrison
Perceptual confirmation paradigm (PCP) rooted in social psychology, can be implemented to frame sport science research questions (Stone, Perry, & Darley, 1997). Public perception of college athletes’ lives has been scarcely investigated in the sport sciences (Keels, 2005) using the PCP to prime stereotypes. The purpose of this study was to prime stereotypes about a day in the life of a college athlete by using qualitative inquiry to assess college students’ (N = 87) perceptions. Participants provided written responses about a day in the life of a college athlete. Two different college athlete targets were used “Tyrone Walker” (n = …
