Capital Market Consequences Of Managers' Voluntary Disclosure Styles, Holly I. Yang Feb 2012

Capital Market Consequences Of Managers' Voluntary Disclosure Styles, Holly I. Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper studies the capital market consequences of managers establishing an individual forecasting style. Using a manager-firm matched panel dataset, I examine whether and when manager-specific credibility matters. If managers' forecasting styles affect their perceived credibility, then the stock price reaction to forecast news should increase with managers' prior forecasting accuracy. Consistent with this prediction, I find that the stock price reaction to management forecast news is stronger when information uncertainty is high and when the manager has a history of issuing more accurate forecasts, indicating that individual managers benefit from establishing a personal disclosure reputation.

The Party's Over: The Role Of Earnings Guidance In Resolving Sentiment-Driven Overvaluation, Nicholas Seybert, Holly I. Yang Feb 2012

The Party's Over: The Role Of Earnings Guidance In Resolving Sentiment-Driven Overvaluation, Nicholas Seybert, Holly I. Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper shows that an important link between investor sentiment and firm over valuation is optimistic earnings expectations, and that management earnings guidance helps resolve sentiment-driven overvaluation. Using previously identified firm characteristics, we find that most of the negative returns to uncertain firms in months following high-sentiment periods fall within the three-day window around the issuance of management earnings guidance. Comparisons of guidance months to nonguidance months show that guidance issuance affects the magnitude and not just the daily distribution of negative returns. There is also some evidence of negative returns around earnings announcements for firms that previously issued guidance, …

Ethical And Environmental Disclosures: An Analysis Of The Oil And Gas Industry, Violet C. Rogers, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh, Jessica Lott

Faculty Publications

This study investigates the similarities of ethical and environmental disclosures, as well as risk factors contained within annual reports for the reporting year 2009. The data were collected from Fortune 500 oil and gas company annual reports. Findings include: 1) an emphasis on environmental, financial, nonfinancial and ethical disclosures and 2) similar reported risks for all companies investigated. The findings illustrate that many of the studied oil and gas companies have similar disclosures but, on the other hand, are situation specific to particular company and location.

Empirical Support For The Pcaob’S Elimination Of The Independent Auditor’S Opinion Regarding Management’S Assessment Of Internal Control, James H. Thompson, Bart H. Ward Jan 2012

Empirical Support For The Pcaob’S Elimination Of The Independent Auditor’S Opinion Regarding Management’S Assessment Of Internal Control, James H. Thompson, Bart H. Ward

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

In an attempt to bolster public confidence in the accounting profession, the PCAOB issued several standards that were intended to address weaknesses in audit reporting and to increase public confidence in financial reporting. One of these standards, Auditing Standard No.2, added two opinions on an enterprise’s internal control to audit reporting requirements. This Standard was superseded by Auditing Standard No. 5, which eliminated one of these opinions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficacy of the elimination of the auditor’s opinion regarding management’s assessment of internal control. The data in this study were taken from 10-K reports …

Off The Hook: Does The Supreme Court's Scheme Liability Ruling Benefit Firms In Litigation-Prone Industries?, Candra S. Chahyadi, Menghistu Sallehu

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This study measures the impact afthe U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 ruling Stoneridge Investment Partners vs. Scientific-Atlanta on the cumulative abnormal returns and changes in bid-ask spread of firms in litigation-prone industries (computer, electronic, pharmaceuticallbiotech, and retail industries). Although we find, in general, positive CARs around the event, we posit and find that the conditional probability that a firm will commit an accounting misstatement affects both CAR and bid-ask spread The results show that firms with a higher probability of committing financial misstatements experience lower returns around the court's ruling. That is, the ruling increases information asymmetry and uncertainty, and thus …

Victory Of The Prussian Railway "Dynamic" Accounting Over The Public Finance And Patrimonial Accounting Models (1838-1884): An Early Illustration Of Th Appearance Of The Second Stage Of Capitalist Financial Accounting And A Testimony Against The Agency And The Market For Excuses Theories, Jacques Richard

Accounting Historians Journal

The history of accounting for private railway companies in Germany shows that these companies played a major role in the diffusion of historical cost accounting principles and gave birth, together with big other joint stock companies, to the “dynamic” or second stage of capitalist accounting, at least in continental Europe. If the representatives of such railway companies did not develop new concepts of accounting, notably as concerned depreciation, they had, by 1875-1879, elaborated a new theory of accounting (historical cost or dynamic theory). This theory had a profound impact at least on the German theorists of the late 19th century and …

Beating Market Expectations, Analysts’ Forecasts Dispersion And The Pricing Of Credit Default Swaps, Mauricio A. Melgarejo Jan 2012

Beating Market Expectations, Analysts’ Forecasts Dispersion And The Pricing Of Credit Default Swaps, Mauricio A. Melgarejo

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of beating analysts’ forecasts and the impact of analysts’ forecast dispersion on the pricing of firms’ credit default swaps (CDSs). CDS premium is the compensation required by investors for bearing firms’ credit default risk. Sell-side analysts collect market, industry and firm information and provide important information in the form of stock recommendations, stock price targets and accounting number forecasts. For that reason, the information contained in their forecasts may provide additional information to investors to price CDSs. My results show that firms that beat analysts’ earnings and revenue forecasts, and …

Locating The Source Of Pacioli's Bookkeeping Treatise, Alan Sangster Jan 2012

Locating The Source Of Pacioli's Bookkeeping Treatise, Alan Sangster

Accounting Historians Journal

There is much we do not know about the early development of double entry bookkeeping. What, for example, caused it to be used by sufficient merchants for it to be formally taught to their sons in Northern Italy before anyone had apparently written anything about it? And, what did Pacioli use as the source for his 1494 treatise, the earliest known detailed written description of the method, something that has challenged researchers for at least the past 130 years? Discovering Pacioli's sources could broaden our knowledge of the Renaissance roots of accounting and of its early role and place in …
