The Evolution Of 10-K Textual Disclosure: Evidence From Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang, Lorien Stice-Lawrence Jan 2017

The Evolution Of 10-K Textual Disclosure: Evidence From Latent Dirichlet Allocation, Travis Dyer, Mark Lang, Lorien Stice-Lawrence

Faculty Publications

We document marked trends in 10-K disclosure over the period 1996–2013, with increases in length, boilerplate, stickiness, and redundancy and decreases in specificity, readability, and the relative amount of hard information. We use Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to examine specific topics and find that new FASB and SEC requirements explain most of the increase in length and that 3 of the 150 topics—fair value, internal controls, and risk factor disclosures—account for virtually all of the increase. These three disclosures also play a major role in explaining the trends in the remaining textual characteristics.

The Consequences Of Audit-Related Earnings Revisions, Jacob Z. Haislip, Linda A. Myers, Susan Scholz, Timothy Seidel Jan 2017

The Consequences Of Audit-Related Earnings Revisions, Jacob Z. Haislip, Linda A. Myers, Susan Scholz, Timothy Seidel

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we investigate the consequences that auditors and their clients face when earnings announced in an unaudited earnings release are subsequently revised, presumably as a result of year-end audit procedures, so that earnings as reported in the 10-K differ from earnings as previously announced. Specifically, we examine whether the likelihood of an auditor ‘losing the client’ is greater following such revisions, and whether the likelihood of dismissal is influenced by revisions that more negatively impact earnings, that cause the client to miss important earnings benchmarks, by greater local auditor competition, or by auditor characteristics. We also examine audit …

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, William O'Keefe Jan 2017

A Comprehensive Review Of Accounting Through Case Studies, William O'Keefe

Honors Theses

The following collection of case studies serves as an overview of important concepts in financial reporting. Every publicly traded company is subject to the same financial accounting standards, meaning these concepts have important real-world applications. The goal of this thesis was to investigate further into the specifics of these concepts to gain a better understanding of their impact on the decision-making processes of these companies. The standards that these companies must follow are not uniformly applied to all companies, so the majority of accountants' work comes from assuring that each company's subjective interpretation of the standards is appropriate. The end …

Jet Fuel Hedging And Modern Financial Theory In The U.S. Airline Industry, Brandon Lee Schweitzer Jan 2017

Jet Fuel Hedging And Modern Financial Theory In The U.S. Airline Industry, Brandon Lee Schweitzer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

To counter the problem of the volatility of jet fuel prices within the United States, many financial managers of U.S. airlines use hedging as a financial tool to mitigate the risk of exposure to market price volatility. However, their efforts often lead to financial distress for their airlines. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore U.S. airline managers' use of financial hedging to reduce the risk of exposure from the volatility of jet fuel prices. The conceptual framework was Simkowitz's theory of modern finance, which concerns debt policy, dividend policy, and investment policy as they relate …

The Relationship Between Corporate Governance And Organizational Performance In Nigerian Companies, Toyin Ishola Lasisi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The growing lack of confidence in public companies arises from the recent accounting scandals and corporate collapses, which have been attributed to the consequences of separation of ownership and control in modern firms. Agency theory predicts a conflict of interest between managers and shareholders that leads to agency costs and weak performance. This study used agency, stakeholders', and stewardship theories as the theoretical framework and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and organizational performance in nonfinancial firms listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The results of the study could help clarify understanding of corporate governance …

Using Accounting Information To Forecast Market Performance, Tyler Atanasov Jan 2017

Using Accounting Information To Forecast Market Performance, Tyler Atanasov

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study examines how accounting information can be used to forecast market performance of stocks. We used the specific accounting information of earnings-to-price and book-to-market value ratios, in relation to a stocks 5-year holding period return to determine market performance. The most current, quarterly data with a longer sample period than previous studies was used. First, portfolios of stocks were formed based on the value of each stocks ratio. Next, univariate tests were then run on each ratio’s portfolios to determine if there was statistical significance in the differences among the portfolios returns. Lastly, we determined that investors could earn …

Relationship Between Mutual Fund Type, Portfolio Turnover, Longevity, Management Turnover, And Performance, Medhanie G. Mekonnen Jan 2017

Relationship Between Mutual Fund Type, Portfolio Turnover, Longevity, Management Turnover, And Performance, Medhanie G. Mekonnen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mutual fund portfolio managers do not always meet risk-adjusted performance expectations, resulting in loss of capital reserves. Out of 3,612 U.S. based open-ended mutual funds, the risk-adjusted performance of 2,890 (80%) failed to meet or beat the S&P 500 (index fund) performance between the year 2006 to 2016. Grounded in Markowitz's modern portfolio theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between mutual fund class type, portfolio turnover, fund longevity, management turnover, and annual fund risk-adjusted performance. Archival data were collected from 88 U.S. based equity mutual funds companies. The results of the multiple regression analysis …

IT leaders expect negative IT project outcomes will cost over $2 billion by 2020. Using the actor-network theory, the purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies used by IT leaders from a midsize IT company in Washington, D.C. to plan and execute projects under budget and on time. Using purposeful sampling, 5 IT leaders were selected for this study because of their experience in implementing successful strategies for projects. Data were collected using …

The Joint Effects Of Management Incentives And Perceived Locus Of Causality On Management Earnings Forecast Disclosures, Kanjana Phonsumlissakul Jan 2017

The Joint Effects Of Management Incentives And Perceived Locus Of Causality On Management Earnings Forecast Disclosures, Kanjana Phonsumlissakul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study investigates the effect of management incentives (directive and transparency) and locus of causality (internal and external) on the willingness of managers to disclose management earnings forecast reports and the accuracy of management's earnings forecast information. The experimental findings show that managers with directive incentives are less likely to disclose the earnings forecast and provide less accurate information to market participants than managers with transparency incentives, for both point and range forecast forms. In addition, locus of causality contributes to the accuracy of management earnings forecast information when the forecasts suggest underperformance, but the findings reveal no significant differences …

Quality, Determinants And Consequences Of Integrated Reporting In South Africa, Kwadjo Appiagyei Jan 2017

Quality, Determinants And Consequences Of Integrated Reporting In South Africa, Kwadjo Appiagyei

ECU Posters

Integrated reporting (IR) is expected to be the next corporate reporting norm which combines the relevant financial and sustainability information in one report to meet the needs of capital providers. IR application all over the world has been largely voluntary while South Africa has introduced a mandatory apply or explain basis for firms on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Although numerous benefits have been attributed to IR, empirical evidence to support these assertions and establish a business case for the adoption of IR is desirable. The research examines the mandatory South African context for the quality of IR since its application …

The Role Of Gender And Ethnic Diversity On The Performance Of Malaysian Private Companies, Rayenda Khresna Brahmana, Mohd Waliuddin Mohd Razali, Hui Wei You

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study examines the effect of gender diversity and board diversity on Malaysian firm performance. This study is different from other studies because instead of using publicly listed companies, it uses 3,735 private companies over 2009–2014. We find that gender has no significant effect on the firm performance but firm’s characteristics such as firm age, firm’s size, liquidity, and leverage have significant effects on the firm performance. Our research further indicates that ethnic diversity in the board of directors may give better performance to companies. This research implies two important findings for the policy makers. First, the encouragement of gender …
