Caveat Emptor: A Study Of Fraud, Red Flags, And Investor Due Diligence, Katherina D. Albers
Honors College Theses
For decades fraud has been an ever growing problem in our society, costing Americans hundreds of billions of dollars each year. Every investor and consumer pay for the effects and damages of fraud directly or indirectly. Investors need to proactively search for red flags before investing. Through an examination of two recent frauds, Theranos and Fyre Media, I will discuss the frauds perpetrated and the red flags present that investors missed.

Innovative food processing technologies have been widely investigated in food processing research in recent years. These technologies offer key advantages for advancing the preservation and quality of conventional foods, for combatting the growing challenges posed by globalization, increased competitive pressures and diverse consumer demands. However, there is a need to increase the level of adoption of novel technologies to ensure the potential benefits of these technologies are exploited more by the food industry. This review outlines emerging thermal and non-thermal food processing technologies with regard to their mechanisms, applications and commercial aspects. The level of adoption of novel food processing …
The Power Of Ethical Investment In The Context Of Political Uncertainty, Lucia Morales, Amparo Soler-Dominguez, Jim Hanly
The Power Of Ethical Investment In The Context Of Political Uncertainty, Lucia Morales, Amparo Soler-Dominguez, Jim Hanly
Articles
In this paper we analyse a set of socially responsible investment (SRI) indices against their conventional counterparts in the US context. Using a data set that spans the Obama and Trump administrations, we aim to identify whether performance and volatility patterns differ when markets are exposed to political uncertainty and the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). The findings suggest that SRI indices underperform conventional indices, and that the S&P 500 has a significant impact on their behaviour. The CBOE’s Volatility Index (VIX), the US Equity Related Economic Uncertainty Index (EEUi) and the impact of the economic policy uncertainty index (EPUi) are …
The Impact Of Firm Characteristics On Speed Of Adjustment To Target Leverage: A Uk Study, James Fitzgerald, J. Ryan
The Impact Of Firm Characteristics On Speed Of Adjustment To Target Leverage: A Uk Study, James Fitzgerald, J. Ryan
Articles
Responding to the need to investigate heterogeneity in the speed of adjustment (SOA) to target leverage in a manner that reflects the fractional nature of leverage, we estimate SOA across sub-samples of UK firms using the Dynamic Panel Fractional (DPF) estimator. Using firm characteristics to identify firms subject to varying costs of deviation from and adjustment to target leverage, we find significant evidence of heterogeneity in the speeds at which UK firms adjust to target leverage. Our results show that small, high growth and low dividend paying firms adjust to target leverage faster than their large, low growth and high …
Cooking A Corporation Tax Controversy: Apple, Ireland And The Eu., Ciara Graham, Brendan O'Rourke
Cooking A Corporation Tax Controversy: Apple, Ireland And The Eu., Ciara Graham, Brendan O'Rourke
Articles
Given the centrality of corporations in distribution of income and wealth studies, discursive constructions of corporate taxation are essential to understanding the production of inequality. The focus of this study is an interview with Apple’s Chief Executive Tim Cook on the Irish state broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann’s (RTÉ) flagship news programme, Morning Ireland, following the ruling by the European Commission (EC) on the corporation tax arrangements between Apple Inc. and Ireland. Drawing on a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, a frame analysis is provided. The significance and extent of the EC’s ruling has potential implications for corporation taxation policy, within …
The Effect Of Auditors’ Informal Communication In The Audit Environment On Financial Reporting Outcomes, Emily K. Hornok
The Effect Of Auditors’ Informal Communication In The Audit Environment On Financial Reporting Outcomes, Emily K. Hornok
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
I examine the effect of auditors’ recurring, informal communication with managers and other auditors on financial reporting outcomes in a laboratory experiment in which participants in the roles of auditors and managers interact in a stylized audit setting. My 2×2 between-subjects design manipulates whether the auditors are able to informally communicate with either, neither, or both the manager and other auditors. I find that when the auditor and manager informally communicate, they each develop a social bond, which increases the manager’s feeling of accountability towards the auditor, causes the manager to make more honest representations to the auditor, and leads …
Revenue Management Strategies For Long-Term Survival Of Small-Farm Wineries, Marie Kulesza
Revenue Management Strategies For Long-Term Survival Of Small-Farm Wineries, Marie Kulesza
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some owners of small-farm wineries have moved to direct and alternative revenue management strategies to generate revenue and create brand awareness because of increased competition and regulatory changes. Research has revealed that owners of small-farm wineries remain financially reliant on direct-to-consumer sales through tasting rooms that represent an estimated 70% of their total revenue generated. This qualitative multiple case study was an exploration of how revenue management decisions of small-farm winery owners may contribute to long-term survival in a regulated industry. Dynamic capabilities concept was the conceptual framework for this study. The study population consisted of 3 small-farm winery owners …
Binary Bright-Line Decision Models For Going Concern Assessment: Analysis Of Analytical Tools For Bankruptcy Prediction Considering Sensitivity To Materiality Thresholds, Sid Bundy
Theses and Dissertations--Accountancy
In August, 2014, the Financial Accounting Standards Board issued an update concerning the disclosure of uncertainties about an entity’s ability to continue as a going concern. The standard requires an entities management to evaluate whether there is substantial doubt about the entity’s ability to continue as a going concern and to provide related footnote disclosures in certain circumstances. One consequence of this regulation is the need for guidance for audit testing of management’s assessments in each phase of the audit.
This research evaluates the usefulness of bankruptcy prediction models as analytical tools in the planning stage of an audit for …
Lenders' Influence On Borrower Firms' Internal Controls, Md Mahmudul Hasan
Lenders' Influence On Borrower Firms' Internal Controls, Md Mahmudul Hasan
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
I identify a covenant in commercial loan contracts that requires borrowers to provide lenders internal control-related private information. Lenders use accounting information to monitor loan contracts and reliable accounting information is dependent on effective internal controls of the firm. I argue and provide evidence that lenders are more likely to demand internal control-related private information when borrowers have weak internal controls, when lenders use more accounting information in debt contracts, and when debt contracts have terms that expose lenders to greater risk. I further show that lenders' demand for internal control-related private information is positively associated with improvement in borrower …
Not Clawing The Hand That Feeds You: The Case Of Co-Opted Boards And Clawbacks, Sterling Huang, Chee Yeow Lim, Jeffrey Ng
Not Clawing The Hand That Feeds You: The Case Of Co-Opted Boards And Clawbacks, Sterling Huang, Chee Yeow Lim, Jeffrey Ng
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine how board co-option, defined as the fraction of the board comprising directors appointed after the CEO assumed office, is related to clawback adoption. We find that co-opted boards have a lower probability of adopting clawback provisions. Further, the negative association between board co-option and clawback adoption is more pronounced when at least one co-opted member is on the compensation committee and when there is a higher likelihood that a clawback provision will be triggered. Finally, we find that board co-option is an important mechanism through which longer-tenured CEOs reduce the likelihood of clawback adoption.
The Economics Of Managerial Taxes And Corporate Risk-Taking, Chris Armstrong, Stephen Glaeser, Sterling Huang, Daniel Taylor
The Economics Of Managerial Taxes And Corporate Risk-Taking, Chris Armstrong, Stephen Glaeser, Sterling Huang, Daniel Taylor
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine the relation between managers’ personal income tax rates and their corporate investment decisions. Using plausibly exogenous variation in federal and state tax rates, we find a positive relation between managers’ personal tax rates and their corporate risk-taking. Moreover—and consistent with our theoretical predictions—we find that this relation is stronger among firms with investment opportunities that have a relatively high rate of return per unit of risk, and stronger among CEOs who have a relatively low marginal disutility of risk. Importantly, our results are unique to senior managers’ tax rates––we do not find similar relations for middle-income tax rates. …

Accounting For Goodwill: The Effectiveness Of Amortization And Impairments Before And After Asc 350, Jessica Cruz
Accounting For Goodwill: The Effectiveness Of Amortization And Impairments Before And After Asc 350, Jessica Cruz
CMC Senior Theses
Prior to the implementation of FAS 142 in 2002, goodwill was amortized annually. Now, companies with goodwill on their books must test it annually for impairment. This paper examines the effectiveness of goodwill amortization and impairment of goodwill both before and after the adoption of FAS 142 by analyzing their effect on abnormal stock returns. My results regarding the effect of goodwill amortization on stock returns are inconsistent, suggesting that goodwill amortization is not useful in determining the value of a company. My results also suggest that the stock market anticipates goodwill impairments before they are announced.

An Analysis Of The Financial Reporting Quality Of Early Adopters Of Accounting Standards Update, Asu 2016-02, Hannah D. Eubanks
Theses and Dissertations
In 2016, the Financial Accounting Standards Board updated the way lease transactions are reported. This paper offers insight into the financial reporting quality of the early adopters of Accounting Standards Update on Leases, ASU 2016-02. Methodology modeled after an event study on clawback provisions conducted by Dehaan, Hodge, and Shelvin (2013) aids in the development of the hypothesis and matched-sample event study using restatements and audit opinions as proxies for financial reporting quality. It is hypothesized that the early adopters of ASU 2016-02 will have better financial reporting quality when compared to a control group. Results do not support the …
Internal Control Strategies For Compliance With The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Grant J. Lee
Internal Control Strategies For Compliance With The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Grant J. Lee
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Publicly traded corporations have dedicated time and money to adhering to the requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) of 2002; however, some companies face challenges in internal control compliance with SOX. Using the transformational leadership theory as the conceptual framework, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies chief financial officers (CFOs) used to comply with corporate financial internal control policies. Data were collected using face-to-face, semistructured interviews with 3 CFOs of publicly traded manufacturing companies in Michigan and a review of documents. The selection criteria for participants included CFOs who have experience in SOX implementation …

Strategies To Prevent And Detect Occupational Fraud In Small Retail Businesses, Marquita V. Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Business owners' lack of strategies to prevent and detect occupational fraud in small retail businesses in the United States could result in substantial financial losses or insolvency. Grounded in Cressey's fraud triangle, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore internal control strategies 6 owners of small retail businesses in southeastern Pennsylvania used to prevent and detect occupational fraud. Face-to-face interviews, observations, and documentation are the data collection techniques I used in this study. Data were transcribed, coded, analyzed, and member checked to identify emergent themes. Six themes emerged from the thematic analysis: financial impact, transaction responsibility and …

Cash Management Strategies To Improve The Sustainability Of Small Tavern Businesses, Maren Michelle Haavig
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The results of small business operations play a significant economic role in developed economies, yet in the United States, approximately 50% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years of operation. Some small business owners embark on small business initiatives without the cash management strategies necessary to sustain their businesses. Grounded on financial literacy theory, this multiple-case study identified the strategies that owners of small businesses used to manage cash in their daily operations. The population included 3 owners of small tavern business in southeast Alaska who have implemented cash management strategies. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, supplementary …
A Holistic View Of Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud, Andrew J. Hultgren
A Holistic View Of Identity Theft Tax Refund Fraud, Andrew J. Hultgren
Honors Theses and Capstones
This thesis attempts to explain what identity theft tax refund fraud is and how the issue has developed over the years. It presents a holistic, historic view of the problem as well as how it has been addressed. It primarily relies on reports from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), Government Accountability Office (GAO) and National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) in its assessment. It does not examine foreign tax administrations’ methods of dealing with identity theft refund fraud or the extent of the issue in other principalities, and therefore this is an area in need …

Regulatory Changes, Board Monitoring And Earnings Management In Nigerian Financial Institutions, Ishaq Ahmed Ishaq Ahmed Mohammed, Ayoib Che-Ahmad, Mazrah Malek
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper explores the heterogeneity of board of directors and shareholders involvement in the audit committee in addressing the question of whether the board of directors and audit committee shareholders are effective in suppressing earnings management after the implementation of 2011 revised Code of Corporate Governance in Nigeria. The paper utilized data generated after the implementation of the new Code. It examines explicitly board effectiveness and audit committee shareholder chairman on earnings management in Nigerian financial institutions. The study utilizes a dynamic panel data model of the generalized method of moment (GMM) in analyzing the data. The empirical results suggest …

Analyst Forecast Bundling, Michael S. Drake, Peter Joos, Joseph Pacelli, Brady Twedt
Faculty Publications
Changing economic conditions over the past two decades have created incentives for sell-side analysts to both provide their institutional clients tiered services and to streamline their written research process. One manifestation of these changes is an increased likelihood of analysts’ issuing earnings forecasts for multiple firms on the same day. We identify this bundling property and show that bundling has increased steadily over time. We provide field evidence that the practice is a cost-saving measure, a natural byproduct of analysts focusing on thematic research, and a reflection of forecast updating that occurs in advance of important events. Our empirical analyses …
The Value Relevance Of Taxes: International Evidence On The Proxy For Profitability Role Of Tax Surprise, Jon Kerr
Faculty Publications
Despite evidence that tax surprise is incrementally value relevant, the literature has done little to broaden the investigation beyond the United States or examine circumstances that affect informativeness. After extending to the international setting, I examine the impact of tax enforcement. I report strong results of greater value relevance when tax enforcement is high and that the value relevance of tax surprise is mostly contained within its interaction with tax enforcement. These findings highlight the importance of tax enforcement in determining the information content of tax surprise and suggest that extant and future discussions should be broadened to include it.

The Loss Of Information Associated With Binary Audit Reports: Evidence From Auditors’ Internal Control And Going Concern Opinions*, Brant E. Christensen, Stevanie S. Neuman, Sarah C. Rice
Faculty Publications
This study provides evidence that binary signals in audit reports are unable to fully communicate underlying risks that are inherently continuous in nature. Specifically, we find that companies whose audit reports signal an improvement in internal control effectiveness relative to the prior year are still more likely to subsequently restate the current year’s financial statements than companies with no material weaknesses in either year. Similarly, companies deemed to no longer have substantial doubt of continuing as a going concern are still more likely to declare bankruptcy than companies with no going concern opinion in either year. Results in both settings …

Ranking Accounting Journals By Topical Area And Methodology, John A. Barrick, Nathan W. Mecham, Scott L. Summers, David A. Wood
Faculty Publications
This paper presents rankings of accounting journals disaggregated by topical area (AIS, audit, financial, managerial, tax, and other) and methodology (analytical, archival, experimental, and other). We find that only for the financial topical area and archival methodology does the traditional top-3 characterization of the best journals accurately describe which journals publish the most-cited work. For all other areas, including AIS, audit, managerial, tax, and other topics, and all other methodologies, including experimental, analytical, and other methodologies the top- 3 characterization does not describe which journals publish the most cited work. For only analytical research does the traditional top-6 journal characterization …
