Revenue Accrual Quality As An Indicator Of Financial Statement Fraud, Meredith Potts Jackson Dec 2017

Revenue Accrual Quality As An Indicator Of Financial Statement Fraud, Meredith Potts Jackson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study was conducted to address the need for additional financial statement fraud detection techniques. Accruals were chosen as the focus of this study due to the high likelihood of financial statement manipulation using accruals. Using the Dechow/Dichev accrual quality model, this study tested whether or not accrual quality can be used as an indicator of financial statement fraud. The study concluded that the Dechow/Dichev model found non-fraudulent financial statements to have higher quality accruals than fraudulent financial statements. In addition, accrual quality of non-fraudulent financial statements was found to be significantly different from the accrual quality of fraudulent financial …

Eva: An Indicator Of Corporate Bankruptcy?, Amanda (Jinxian) Lu

Honors College Theses

Economic value added (EVA) analysis is one of the most common methods to evaluate company’s performance in terms of value creation, which involves ROIC (Return on Invested Capital) and WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital) as key drivers. Past studies evaluate the superiority of EVA over other measures of performance and relationship between EVA and stock returns. This paper analyzes the relationship between EVA and bankruptcy on 373 public traded companies in U.S. of which 178 companies filed for bankruptcy between the year of 2015 to October 2017. We present descriptive statistics, conduct univariae grouping tests and correlation between ROIC, …

The Effect Of Corporate Social Responsibility Investment And Disclosure On Cooperation In Business Collaborations, Sukari Farrington Nov 2017

The Effect Of Corporate Social Responsibility Investment And Disclosure On Cooperation In Business Collaborations, Sukari Farrington

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I experimentally examine whether disclosure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) investment facilitates cooperation in business collaborations. Business collaborations are essential for firms to maintain their competitive advantage. However, half of all ventures fail. A major reason for this high failure rate is a lack of cooperation among business collaboration partners, known as relational risk. Findings suggest that CSR disclosure leads to greater CSR investment, but does not result in an overall higher level of cooperation. However, CSR disclosure moderates the link between CSR investment and cooperation. When CSR investment is disclosed, cooperation is highest when both managers invest in CSR. …

Introduction To Animal Therapy And Its Related Tax Benefits, Claudia L. Kelley, Christopher K. Eller Nov 2017

Introduction To Animal Therapy And Its Related Tax Benefits, Claudia L. Kelley, Christopher K. Eller

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

How are animals being used to improve the emotional and physical health of individuals? What are the tax implications associated with service and therapy animals? We examine these questions by providing an introduction to the subject of Animal Assisted Therapy, including how therapists and counselors are routinely using therapy animals in both individual and group treatment settings. Additionally, we discuss the potential tax savings that may be available to counselors and their clients who are using service and therapy animals. We also offer recommendations and guidance for counselors who wish to incorporate animal therapy into their treatment options.

The Economic Costs To Audit Firms Of Ethical Violations And The Resulting Pcaob Disciplinary Orders, Stephanie Ann Merrell Nov 2017

The Economic Costs To Audit Firms Of Ethical Violations And The Resulting Pcaob Disciplinary Orders, Stephanie Ann Merrell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This paper examines whether ethical violations committed by an audit partner and the public release of the resulting PCAOB disciplinary order affects the associated audit firms’ switching risk, audit fees and audit quality relative to other comparable audit firms. I examine the effects of ethical violations on audit firms affiliated with a sanctioned auditor (also referred to as affiliated audit firm or sanctioned auditor) at the city (office), MSA, state, regional, and national (firm) level in order to determine if there is a spill-over effect. My findings suggest that at no level in my analysis did the public disclosure of …

The Effects Of An Auditor's Communication Mode And Professional Tone On Client Responses To Audit Inquiries, Aaron Saiewitz, Thomas Kida Nov 2017

The Effects Of An Auditor's Communication Mode And Professional Tone On Client Responses To Audit Inquiries, Aaron Saiewitz, Thomas Kida

Accounting Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigate whether receiving an auditor inquiry via e-mail differentially affects client responses as compared to more traditional modes of inquiry, and whether those responses are affected by the auditor's professional tone. In an experiment, experienced business professionals respond to an auditor's information request regarding a potential accounting adjustment. We varied the communication mode of the request (e-mail, audio, or visual) and the professional tone of the communication (more versus less professional) and then measured the extent to which participants revealed information that either supported or did not support the client's accounting position. We find that if …

Heineken's Acquisition Of Asia Pacific Breweries: Accounting For Business Combinations And Ownership Interests, Pearl Hock Neo Tan, Chu Yeong Lim

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

On July 20, 2012, Heineken, a Dutch brewery offered S$5.125 billion (Singapore dollars; approximately US$4.1 billion) to buy Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB; formerly, Malayan Breweries Limited) from its Singapore-based joint venture partner, Fraser and Neave, Limited. (F&N). At that point, Heineken and F&N had joint control over APB through the joint venture vehicle Asia Pacific Investments Pte Ltd (APIPL). Brewery business under the joint arrangement had moved on quite predictably from the time APB was formed in 1931. However, the calm changed to high drama when Thai Beverage, owned by one of Thailand's tycoons, made a bid for F&N …

A Case Study On Inventory Costing Methods, Natalie Hunton Nov 2017

A Case Study On Inventory Costing Methods, Natalie Hunton

Honors Theses

Firms use costing methods to determine the price of a product and to analyze the efficiency of resource consumption. These methods often comply with the external financial reporting rules set forth by the U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which require all manufacturing costs, including overhead, to be assigned to goods in inventory for costing purposes. However, firms can internally use alternative costing methods that do not comply with GAAP. The purpose of this case study is to understand and evaluate the costing method currently employed by a company in the Dayton, OH area1, and identify the most beneficial costing …

Fees, Going Concern Opinions And Auditor Dismissals: An Empirical Assessment, Frances Ann Stott Oct 2017

Fees, Going Concern Opinions And Auditor Dismissals: An Empirical Assessment, Frances Ann Stott

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Auditors issue going concern modified opinions when there is substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue its operations into the foreseeable future. Companies frequently respond to this type of audit opinion by changing auditors. Critics, such as the SEC, suggest that this may be done in order to opinion shop (i.e., find an auditor who is likely to issue a more favorable unqualified opinion). However, prior research has indicated that opinion shopping may not be effective. Since firms receiving a going concern modified opinion are clearly under significant financial distress, the effect a change in auditor has on subsequent …

Additional Evidence On The Impact Of The International Financial Reporting Standards On Earnings Quality: Evidence From Latin America, Mauricio Melgarejo Oct 2017

Additional Evidence On The Impact Of The International Financial Reporting Standards On Earnings Quality: Evidence From Latin America, Mauricio Melgarejo

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

The purpose of this paper is to explore whether the adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) has an impact on the quality of earnings in Latin America. Studying a sample offirms from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Peru, I find that management reports a lower level of discretionary accruals after the implementation of the IFRS. In addition, this study provides evidence that earnings are more persistent and stock prices are more associated with earning numbers after the application of IFRS. This paper provides evidence that earnings quality has increased after the adoption of IFRS in Latin America.

The Fall Of Enron And The Creation Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Megan Connell

HON499 projects

The goal of this research paper is to analyze accounting fraud and its characteristics, explore the collapse of Enron and what happened because of it, and how the relationship between an auditor and its client has changed because of the creation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Learning about some of the positives and negatives of SOX will help the progression of the research into how the passing of SOX has changed over 15 years later. After discussing these topics, a personal opinion on the fall of Enron, if one group is more at fault than another, and how regulation …

Non-Competes, Career Concerns, And Debt Covenants, Yun Lou, Rencheng Wang, Yi Zhou Oct 2017

Non-Competes, Career Concerns, And Debt Covenants, Yun Lou, Rencheng Wang, Yi Zhou

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We study the impact of managers’ career concerns from non-competes enforcement on the design of debt covenants in private debt agreements. Using exogenous changes in the enforceability of managers’ non-compete clauses over the period of 1992-2004 across states in the United States, we show that borrowers headquartered in U.S. states with strong enforcement of non-compete clauses have fewer debt covenants compared to those headquartered in states with weak enforcement after controlling for reporting quality, risk taking, and firm performance. Our evidence is consistent with the argument that reduced job mobility and enhanced career concerns incentivize managers to ex ante avoid …
