A Hermeneutic Exploration Of And Proposed Solution To The Schism Between Researchers And Clinicians In Psychology, Mark S. Green

Fragmentation in the field of psychology has persisted throughout its history (Slife, 2000). One example of this fragmentation is the gap between researchers and clinicians (Teachman, Drabick, Hershenberg, Vivian, & Wolfe 2012). Although many attempts have been made to bridge this gap, there is still no consensus regarding its resolution. This dissertation provides an explanation for the gap at the philosophical level and provides a method for communicating across potentially incommensurable philosophies, based on Gadamer’s (1960/1989) hermeneutic opus: Truth and Method.

As one of the prominent and influential philosophers of her time, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was well known for her 1898 study, Women and Economics: A Study of the Economic Relation between Men and Women as a Factor in Social Evolution. This study demonstrated the negative perceptions maintained toward women from within an androcentric culture. Gilman's treatise developed into a life long argument for the equal treatment and considered value of one-half of the human population: women. This study investigates the influence of Alexander Bain (1818-1903) and Herbert Spencer (1820-1903) upon William James (1842-1910). James is generally considered to be the foremost American psychologist and the one who "introduced" experimental psychology to the United States. James had become familiar with the psychological writings of Bain and Spencer early in his career, and he used Spencer's The Principles of Psychology and later Bain's The Senses and the Intellect and The Emotions and the Will as textbooks for his course in psychology at Harvard.
