This thesis is an exposition of the metaphysical position set down by Paul Weiss in his Modes of Being. It is written in answer to the question, "How is it that there are four irreducible modes of being as held by Paul Weiss?" While the bulk of material with which this thesis deals derives directly from Modes of Being, several of Weiss' central arguments in support of his position were taken from an earlier work, Reality, written in 1939. The fundamental metaphysical positions of both works are compatible with one another.

This thesis intends to make a thorough study of the dialogue Philebus. The manner in which this is done is as follows: First of all, certain preliminary matters are discussed in this Introduction, including the relationship of the doctrine of pleasure in the Philebus to that doctrine in some of the other dialogues, in an attempt to arrive at a synthetic statement of Plato's theory of pleasure. In the second chapter, the progression of the argument of the Philebus is analyzed, while in the third, a commentary is provided on the more important sections of the dialogue.
