Practical Rationality: Critical Questions For Rational Decision Making, Mark Battersby

Critical thinking should be conceived as instruction in applied rationality providing guidance for deciding what to believe and do. The latter has not gotten the attention it deserves, but in expanding its ambit, critical thinking instruction must avoid using the dominant “rational choice” model inherited from economics. This paper argues for an alternative model of rational decision making that is appropriate for critical thinking courses.

Moral character development has long been a concern of educators. A recent resurgence of scholarship in neuro-biology and cognitive science has further energized this interest. How can this research and best practices be integrated into faith based high school and college curricular and co-curricular programming? We highlight key trends and resent discoveries and discuss promising practices, starting with professional development programs. We also offer a new paradigm of “moral health and well-being” that promises to involve the head (moral thinking), heart (emotions) and hand (behavior and actions) in this important learning process.

These proceedings are a representative sample of the presentations given by professional practitioners and academic scholars at the 2020 International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference (ICRCC) held March 9-11, 2020. The ICRCC is an annual event that takes place the second week in March in beautiful sunny Orlando, Florida. The conference hosts are faculty and staff from the Nicholson School of Communication and Media.
