Nouns And Pronouns In Central Lembata Lamaholot (Austronesian, Indonesia), Hanna Fricke

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In the past, linguists focused their studies on the description of the varieties of Lamaholot spoken in coastal communities. This article introduces Central Lembata Lamaholot, a Lamaholot variety spoken in the central mountains on the island of Lembata in the Indonesian province Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), which possesses features in the nominal and pronominal domains not found in other varieties of Lamaholot described so far. Alienable nouns in Central Lembata have morphological plural and specificity marking, and one sub-set of the alienable nouns has two alternating forms which are functionally different. Furthermore, free and bound pronouns in Central Lembata Lamaholot …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Mabedda Bola is a ritual which has been handed down from the ancestors of the Bugis - Makassarese people in South Sulawesi. At the ceremony which is called menre bola baru, held as part of the ritual inauguration of a new house, the Mabedda Bola, handprints are made on the poles and walls of the new house. In the region in which this custom is still honoured, hand stencils on the walls of the prehistoric caves have also been found. This article examines the significance of handprints in the Mabedda Bola ritual which might possibly be related to the hand …

Frightened By The Eagle; Recording Songs And Music From The Island Of Siberut, Mentawai Islands, Gerard A. Persoon, Reimar Schefold

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Singing is the most important element of the traditional music culture on Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands (West Sumatra, Indonesia). There are various types of songs on the island. Some of them are related to the world of spirits and ancestors. These are mainly sung by shamans during healing ceremonies and rituals. Other songs are made up by men and women during their daily activities, when they are fishing out at sea or when they take a rest from collecting forest products. Various animals (birds, primates, reptiles) or natural forces (wind, thunder) provide inspiration for lyrics and melodies, …

The Sling And The Blowgun As Combat Weapons In Pre-Islamic Java; Notes On Old Javanese Terms "GaṇḌI" And "Tulup", Jiří Jákl Oct 2017

The Sling And The Blowgun As Combat Weapons In Pre-Islamic Java; Notes On Old Javanese Terms "GaṇḌI" And "Tulup", Jiří Jákl

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Two Old Javanese terms, ga i and tulup, are discussed in detail. While the term tulup appears to be unproblematic, ga i has previously been identified with a score of weapons, including bow, club, war hammer, and sling. I argue that the original meaning of this enigmatic term is 'projectile, pellet', while its second, derived meaning refers in most cases to 'sling', and, occasionally, to 'blowgun'. Both weapons are represented in the Old Javanese textual record as the weapons associated with predatory warfare, and with the forces of adharma. I have tentatively suggested that this configuration reflects the pre-modern reality …

From The Womb To The Tree; Child-Rearing Practices And Beliefs Among The Toraja Of Sulawesi, Toke Hoppenbrouwers, Stanislaus Sandarupa, Aurora Donzelli

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article documents beliefs about pregnancy, birth, infant, and maternal health and infant death in Toraja, Sulawesi. We interviewed 42 mothers of babies between one week and six months old, a dozen traditional and contemporary midwives, the ritual specialist to minaa Tato' Dena', a physician and two traditional healers. We performed a cursory examination of the extent to which mothers and health professionals still adhere to the beliefs of to dolo (the ancestors or the people from before). Examples of rejected beliefs are that intercourse adversely affects breast milk and that it should await the end of the recommended two-year …

Reconstruction Of An Indigenous Community's Belief In Dragon; Research On Prehistoric Batu Naga Site In Kuningan, West Java, Ali Akbar

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Archaeological remains can be used as data to reconstruct the culture of the past. At the top of Mount Tilu, Kuningan, stands a menhir decorated with reliefs. The indigenous community which once cared for this site has long vanished. This paper is the result of a research applying archaeological method and semiotic interpretation to reconstruct the life of this long-dead indigenous community. The reliefs on the menhir tell of the beliefs of this ancient which venerated the dragon. They considered this creature as the beginning of life on the earth. This dragon is different from its counterparts known in other …

Pecinan As An Inspiration; The Contribution Of Chinese Indonesian Architecture To An Urban Environment, Wiwi Tjiook

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Since the abrogation of Presidential Instruction Number 14/1967 which banned Chinese customs celebrations and religion in public, there has been a revival in Chinese festivals, language, art, media, culture and not in the least in the field of architecture and urban planning. With increasing interest in heritage and the support of the Indonesian government for heritage cities programmes, several promising initiatives involving Chinese architecture have been launched in cities both large and small. A brief glance of the history of Chinese Indonesian architecture is given, as well as some recent initiatives in selected cities plus a discussion of the importance …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

A short introduction about earlier authors who have dealt with the text is followed by comments on the composition, structure and historical value of this unique urban history.

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines the efforts and achievements of Oen Boen Ing, a Tionghoa doctor, to improve the quality of health of the poorer inhabitants of Surakarta. Dr Oen played an important role in five different periods: Dutch colonialism, the Japanese occupation, the Indonesian revolution, Soekarno's regime, and Suharto's New Order. Known for being a benevolent doctor, activist, and patriot of the revolution during his life-time, Dr Oen also gave medical assistance to the needy, which famously earned him the accolade of "doctor of the poor". During the Indonesian revolution, Dr Oen assisted the Student Soldiers (Tentara Pelajar) and afterwards was …

Chinese Correspondence In Dutch East Indies (1865-1949), Tjong Han Siem May 2017

Chinese Correspondence In Dutch East Indies (1865-1949), Tjong Han Siem

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article is an attempt to describe some aspects of the social history of the Chinese minority in the Dutch East Indies using items of postal history as a guide. It is a very personal view, seen through the eyes of a philatelist. Using a postal history collection, aspects of political history can be illustrated and/or documented. This article is certainly not to be read as a solid, documented scientific exercise. It should be read in the spirit of educational entertainment.

Culture, Power And Identity; The Case Of Ang Hien Hoo, Malang, Melani Budianta

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper discusses the intricate relations between culture and identity in a web of larger power structures of politics and the market by looking at the ways in which the Indonesian Chinese attach themselves to a local performing arts tradition. The paper focuses on the history of the wayang orang amateur club called Ang Hien Hoo in Malang, East Java, which emerged from a Chinese diaspora burial association, to attract national limelight in the 1950s and 1960s. In this paper, I see this amateur club as a site, not only for cultural assimilation, but also as a meeting space for …

Chinese Photographers And Their Clientele In The Netherlands Indies, 1890-1940, Liesbeth Ouwehand May 2017

Chinese Photographers And Their Clientele In The Netherlands Indies, 1890-1940, Liesbeth Ouwehand

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article examines the position of Chinese photographers in the visual colonial landscape. The Chinese toekang potret were involved in both commissioned photographs and the production of commercial images, but the latter was less widespread. Contrary to the image that Chinese photographers' clients were from the lower strata of society, this article shows that they were commissioned by the European, Chinese and Javanese elite. The image materiality of the portraits reveals the visual traces of circulation and exchange. Hence, the Chinese photographers were indirectly involved in these elite networks as well.

"Bangsawan Prampoewan"; Enlightened Peranakan Chinese Women From Early Twentieth Century Java, Didi Kwartanada

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The end of the nineteenth century witnessed paradox among the Chinese in colonial Java. On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt by the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their children in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become "civilized subjects", on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role played by "enlightened" Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girls known to the public as …

The Chinese-Indonesian Collections In The National Museum Of World Cultures, The Netherlands, Francine Brinkgreve

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Among the more than 130,000 objects from Indonesia in the Dutch National Museum of World Cultures, many once belonged to or were used by the Chinese population of Indonesia. In this article, the authors provide an overview of these collections by presenting their collecting histories from the earliest acquisitions to the most recent collections and by highlighting a number of objects, which in their materials, techniques, motifs, colours or function show a combination of elements from both Chinese and Indonesian cultures. The authors pay particular attention to objects which play a role in the Chinese-Indonesian wedding ceremony.

"Sajarah Cina"; A Nineteenth-Century Apology In Javanese, Willem Van Der Molen May 2017

"Sajarah Cina"; A Nineteenth-Century Apology In Javanese, Willem Van Der Molen

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The sometimes precarious position of the Chinese in Indonesia has a long history. The (most probably) nineteenth-century author, Apdul Mutalip, advocated a more balanced view by pointing out some fundamental contributions the Chinese had made to the welfare of the Javanese; he also demonstrates that their presence in Java has a basis in law. Although seems like a poem in Javanese metre, his Sajarah Cina, written in Javanese, is remarkable not only for its subject matter but also for the way the material is presented, in a rhetoric unknown to exist in Javanese literature by most scholars.

An Early Story Of Kho Ping Hoo, C.W. Watson May 2017

An Early Story Of Kho Ping Hoo, C.W. Watson

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Kho Ping Hoo (1926-1994) is the most well-known of all Indonesian writers of popular silat stories, largely set in China, which describe the adventures and romances of legendary heroes famed for their skill in martial arts. It is less well-known that he began his career writing critical stories about socio-economic conditions in the late 50s and early 60s. This paper discusses one of these stories. It places the story in the context of political developments of the time, in particular as they affected the Chinese Indonesian community. The paper argues that this story and one or two others like it …

Chinese "Taukeh", Labourer, And State Control; Case Study Of "Panglong" In Eastern Region Of Sumatra (1890-1930), Erwiza Erman

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Recently the flow of labour from China to Indonesia has fuelled many discussions but is not a new phenomenon. It can be traced back to the eighteenth century and continued until the twentieth century. In colonial Indonesia, the Chinese labour force was recruited to work in the economic sectors of mining, plantations, fisheries and forestry. Unfortunately, previous studies about Chinese society in Indonesia more focused on economic and political elites rather than the social history of the Chinese contract coolies. This article attempts to look at the labour history of the Chinese coolie in the forest exploitation companies, known as …

Violent, Political, And Administrative Repression Of The Chinese Minority In Indonesia, 1945-1998, Mary Somers Heidhues

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Since Indonesian independence, its Chinese minority has been a victim of violent outbreaks, but also of restrictive policies arising from politics and administrative measures. From about 1957, with the closure of Chinese-language schools and subsequent regulations about expression of Chinese culture, many speak of the "erasure" of that culture through such restrictions. Violent anti-Chinese outbreaks have proceeded from the Indonesian Revolution and the presidency of Soekarno (especially the so-called "PP-10" measures against Chinese rural traders) to the era of Suharto, which began with the 1965-1967 anti-Communist massacres and their effects on ehtnic Chinese and came to an end with the …

The House Of Kwee Sik Poo; An Indonesian-Chinese Merchant From Pasuruan, Kwee Hong Sien Apr 2017

The House Of Kwee Sik Poo; An Indonesian-Chinese Merchant From Pasuruan, Kwee Hong Sien

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The Kwee family is an old Indonesian-Chinese family from Pasuruan, in East Java, and one of a few merchant families of either Chinese or Arab ethnic origin which led successful lives in this small town in the nineteenth century. From their Chinese ancestral village, Liu Chuan in Fujian province, China, a Kwee ancestor travelled to Southeast Asia and settled in Pasuruan, probably in the eighteen century. As with many families who held important positions in the ethnic Chinese community, it also owned large homes, mostly in a mixed architectural style, called "eclecticism" and later in what was known as "the …

The Chinese From Indonesia In The Netherlands And Their Heritage; Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center (Cihc), Patricia Tjiook Liem

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Chinese from Indonesia in the Netherlands are (post)colonial migrants who share a long historical tie with the Dutch. In this article the author brings together and focuses on three interconnected subjects: Chinese from Indonesia in the Netherlands; the historical development and present meaning of "heritage"; and the Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center (CIHC). For her research on the Chinese Indonesians in the Netherlands, the author has used the literature available on this minority group. The scarce specific data for this group are part of the explanation of its "invisibility" in society and research, and of the difficulty in quantifying them. The …

Moral Is Political; Notions Of Ideal Citizenship In Lie Kim Hok's "Hikajat Khonghoetjoe", Evi Sutrisno

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper argues that the Hikajat Khonghoetjoe (The life story of Confucius), written by Lie Kim Hok in 1897, is a medium to propose modern ideas of flexible subjectivity, cosmopolitanism, active citizenship and the concepts of good governance to the Chinese Peranakans who experienced political and racial discrimination under Dutch colonization. Using the figure of Confucius, Lie aimed to cultivate virtuous subjects who apply their faith and morality in political sphere. He intended to raise political awareness and rights among the Chinese as colonial subjects and to valorize their bargaining power with the Dutch colonial government. By introducing Confucianism, Lie …

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The principal objective of this article is to focus on the life-story of Siauw May Lie and her views about her past. She is the daughter of the well-known, influential politician, Siauw Giok Tjhan. Between 1945 and 1965 Siauw Giok Tjhan was member of the Parliament of the Indonesian Republic and chairman of Baperki (Badan Permusyawaratan Kewarganegaraan Indonesia, 1954-1965). Her life-story fits into the category of respondents with a cumulative migration history. Indonesian Chinese In The Netherlands And The Legacies Of Violence In Colonial And Post-Colonial Indonesia, Alexander Van Der Meer, Martijn Eickhoff Apr 2017

Indonesian Chinese In The Netherlands And The Legacies Of Violence In Colonial And Post-Colonial Indonesia, Alexander Van Der Meer, Martijn Eickhoff

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

After Indonesian independence in 1945, thousands of Indonesian Chinese repatriated to the Netherlands, the former colonizer. As opposed to other repatriates from Indonesia, who organized themselves into pressure groups and fought for a place in the national memory culture, the Indonesian Chinese in the Netherlands only formed strict socio-cultural associations and have generally stayed clear of identity politics. Usually, this divergence is attributed to the smooth integration and socio-economic success of the latter group, as well as to Chinese values, such as conflict avoidance. This article adds to this explanation by positing that this phenomenon has also been induced by …

Long Way Home; The Life History Of Chinese-Indonesian Migrants In The Netherlands, Yumi Kitamura Apr 2017

Long Way Home; The Life History Of Chinese-Indonesian Migrants In The Netherlands, Yumi Kitamura

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The purpose of this paper is to trace the modern history of Indonesia through the experience of two Chinese Indonesians who migrated to the Netherlands at different periods of time. These life stories represent both post-colonial experiences and the Cold War politics in Indonesia. The migration of Chinese Indonesians since the beginning of the twentieth century has had long history, however, most of the previous literature has focused on the experiences of the "Peranakan" group who are not representative of various other groups of Chinese Indonesian migrants who have had different experiences in making their journey to the Netherlands. This …

Chinese Officers In Cirebon, Steve Haryono

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

The city of Cirebon was not as large as Batavia (Jakarta) or Semarang, but its location on the northern shore of Java made it an important harbour city from which the inland regions of the southern part of West Java could be serviced. As a harbour town, Cirebon became the regional centre of trade and commerce, and many Chinese immigrants settled there. As were other cities, Cirebon fell under the governance of the VOC and later of the Netherlands Indies administration A Chinese officer was appointed to deal with Chinese community issues in the region. With the exception of the …
