In Spring of 1811, Polly Allen, a settler on the land that would become Lauderdale County, Alabama, was forced to leave her home by soldiers acting upon orders of territorial agreement. Before the soldiers burned her home, Allen offered them a meal, which led the soldiers to extinguish the flames rather than leave her and her family homeless.

During the Civil War, Confederate women had the opportunity to go to work as nurses. The majority of these women had never been allowed to take on roles beyond the domestic sphere in antebellum society. Despite most of these women having limited medical training, they developed an expertise in nursing, extraordinary organization skills and gained respect for their achievements. The state of Tennessee played a central part in the battle for ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, which would secure women’s right to vote. While the showdown in Nashville in August 1920 when suffragists and anti-suffragists descended upon the city to lobby for their respective sides gained a lot of attention for the state’s role in woman suffrage, the increasing opportunities of women outside the domestic sphere helped launch the suffrage movement.
