This collection contains the personal, educational, and professional possessions of Mildred Mitchell-Bateman. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper articles, association newsletters, professional planners, financial documents, plaques, and other personal memorabilia. The materials document Bateman’s various roles within local, state, and national psychology and psychiatric organizations. The collection is organized into six series: Series 1, Personal; Series 2, Education; Series 3, Professional Experience; Series 4, Correspondence; Series 5, Associations; and Series 6, Bound Books, Bound Volumes and list of Newspapers.

The Sally Cyrus Collection is the donated papers of Sally Cyrus, Peggy Cyrus, and Judy Cyrus. This collection chronicles their material contributions to several prominent Huntington organizations. This collection provides an in-depth look at the lives of one of Huntington’s upper-class families beginning in the 1920s and extending through the 1960s, a period in which Huntington experienced an economic boom and a population increase. Elizabeth Kee served as the first woman to represent West Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1951-1964. Newly available sources: taped interviews with her son, Jim Kee, from 1978 and 1980; a complete copy of Elizabeth Kee’s entries into the Congressional Record; copies of many of her “Keenotes” columns from the late 1950s and early 1960s; and correspondence between Elizabeth Kee and veterans from West Virginia from 1961-1963 allow a more complete picture of Kee to emerge. Carrie Eldridge is a genealogical researcher in Chesapeake, Ohio. This collection contains photocopies of many county record books of the Appalachian areas of West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, ranging from the American Revolution until the early twentieth century. It also contains her personal research files on topics related to slavery and the Underground Railroad in Ohio and West Virginia as well as local history topics such as church and family histories.

The collection contains of two manuscripts bound together, “George Webb Family Deeds Recorded in States of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia” and “Family Bible of Benjamin Franklin Swann, Louisa Jane Hatfield Swann”. These manuscripts were copied by Marion S. McCullough and Helen B. Webb, both members of the Westmoreland Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. They former manuscript contains transcriptions of six deed records while the latter contains four pages of birth, marriage, death, and other family bible records. An index is included.

The collection contains a compilation of genealogy and local history materials created or copied by NSDAR members while conducting chapter activities. Materials are primarily focused on Wood and Wayne County deeds, birth, death, and will data, but also includes family Bible records submitted by NSDAR chapter members throughout the state of West Virginia in addition to miscellaneous county records, include deeds, will abstracts, and cemetery records, from around the state.

The Nancy Murray Mann papers consist of correspondences, speeches in various paper formats, newspaper clippings, government publications, photographs, copies of Mann’s passport, land deeds, and research notes from Ben Riley, a Marshall University graduate student from 1983-1985. The focus of the collection primarily covers Mann’s political and social activities, particularly her political involvement during the 1928 presidential campaign for Herbert Hoover and her subsequent work during his administration. Several of her letters are addressed to President Hoover; however almost of the responses come from his secretary Lawrence Richey. This collection consists of a minute book for the Parkersburg Colored Civic Welfare League covering the period from 1932-1934, a letter of thanks from a League-funded college student in Florida with 1932 minutes on the back, Virgie Giles membership card to the Ohio Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, an invitation to a charity ball, and a card announcing the opening of Giles’ “La Giles Beauty Parlor” in Parkersburg.

Irene D. Broh was born on November 20, 1880, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Through the influence of her mother, a suffragist who worked with Susan B. Anthony, Mrs. Broh joined the suffrage movement and helped women earn the right to vote. After marrying Ephraim Broh in 1909, she moved to Huntington, WV, where she organized a suffrage club in 1915. Mrs. Broh became the first woman to vote in Cabell County, WV, in 1920. In her interview, Mrs. Broh focuses on her work for women’s suffrage. She describes how she organized her club, the voting facilities in Huntington, and her experience …
