This essay is a revised version of a paper originally presented at the "Fifth Conference on the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals" at University of Copenhagen on October 26, 2009. Investigates the use of "medievalism" by George Tyrell in his book, Medievalism. A Reply to Cardinal Mercier (1908). Tyrell, who argues in favor of a modern(ist), intelligent, Catholic faith, sees the Church's reorientation toward the Middle Ages in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as a misdirected form of originalism, which he rejects as "medievalism."
