Connection Of The Neolithic Cultures Of Ireland And Brittany As Revealed By Their Passage Graves, Jennifer L. Harney
Connection Of The Neolithic Cultures Of Ireland And Brittany As Revealed By Their Passage Graves, Jennifer L. Harney
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Neolithic cultures of Western Europe existed during a period about which there is little substantial information. In most areas, there was a lack of a written language and also of resilient cultural artifacts which would shed light on the characteristics of a given civilization. Given these circumstances, it becomes a challenge to develop a clear picture of what life was like in Neolithic Europe, what religion was practiced, how societies were set up, and how different cultures interacted with each other. One thing which these peoples did leave behind was their megalithic graves, built of massive stones that have …

The Holocaust, Gulag, And Sociology: Why Is There Less Scholarly Interest In The Soviet Repressive System?, Rachel Schroeder
The Holocaust, Gulag, And Sociology: Why Is There Less Scholarly Interest In The Soviet Repressive System?, Rachel Schroeder
Honors Theses
The Soviet Gulag and the Holocaust are two formative events that claimed millions of victims in the twentieth century; however, the Gulag has received markedly less interest from scholars. Why does such a major discrepancy exist in the amount of attention that is focused on the Gulag as compared to the Holocaust? This paper offers a response to the above question. It explores the scale and dimensions of the discrepancy through a comparative analysis of a Gulag bibliography and a Holocaust bibliography. The paper also offers a response to the question of why the discrepancy exists by inquiring into the …

The Synod Of Dordrecht 1618-1619. The Influence Of Calvinism On The Development Of Freedom In The Netherlands In The Period 1560-1630, Joseph A. Van Burik
The Synod Of Dordrecht 1618-1619. The Influence Of Calvinism On The Development Of Freedom In The Netherlands In The Period 1560-1630, Joseph A. Van Burik
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The Synod of Dordrecht was an important event in the history of the Dutch Republic. A serious, combined religious and political conflict between orthodox and liberal Calvinists had brought the Republic to the brink of civil war. The forceful intervention of the stadholder Prince Maurice in 1617 had cleared the political situation and it was the task of the Synod to solve the religious aspect of the conflict. The Synod was a victory for orthodox Calvinism; the Reformed Church, the state and local governments were purged from liberal elements, and new laws, limiting further the freedom for non-Reformed religions were …

Bolshevism And The Avant-Garde: Marxist Ideology And The Aesthetics Of Soviet Film, 1923-28, Garrett H. Booker
History Theses & Dissertations
When Eisenstein's Strike burst onto the cultural scene in 1925, Soviet cinema began a creative odyssey that left to posterity a brilliant collection of films that redefined the manner in which audiences viewed them. Not only was the form of these films dynamic and innovative, but their content captured the heroic actions of a new historical subject, the revolutionary proletariat. As the Soviet State assumed control over the production of films, politics imprinted its indelible mark on the content of these films, especially as Stalin tightened his grip over all aspects of artistic life. The author of this project will …
The Rhetoric And Reality Of Famine In Early Modern Europe, Karen Russell Adams
The Rhetoric And Reality Of Famine In Early Modern Europe, Karen Russell Adams
History Theses & Dissertations
Famine in early modern Europe was a reoccurring phenomenon that caused stress on individuals and their societies. In most historical accounts of famine, authors have placed emphasis on either the physical aspects of starvation, including studies of famine victims, both live and post mortem, or the disastrous effects of such crises on demographics. On occasion, a researcher has instead probed the accounts of famine left behind by its victims. This essay is an attempt to correlate famine narratives with the biological aspects of starvation.
In order to blend the physical and social aspects of famine, this researcher has investigated three …

Letter From South Carolina, 23, 1737, Johann Ulrich Giezendanner
Letter From South Carolina, 23, 1737, Johann Ulrich Giezendanner
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Introductory Note:
Johann Ulrich Giezendanner ( 1686-173 7) of Lichtensteig, Canton St. Gallen, Switzerland, by profession a gold- and silversmith, had briefly studied at the University of Marburg in Germany and had become one of the 'awakened' in the spirit of Pietism which was then influencing the various Christian denominations. (The movement minimized the difference between clergy and laity and stressed religion as a matter of experience and deeply-felt piety rather than as doctrine and as a set of rules to be obeyed.) Between 1 715 and 1720 J. U. Giezendanner preached to large crowds, but was silenced by offical …

Review: Lionel Gossman, Basel In The Age Of Burckhardt. A Study In Unseasonable Ideas, Benn Williams
Swiss American Historical Society Review
"Monotonie sans egale" or sanctuary for "unbridled thinkers"?
Being human and prone to forming first impressions, this reviewer glanced at the full title of the text under review, and saw red flags rising. First, in the spirit of full disclosure, this non-Swiss reviewer has only "visited" Basel once: an unpleasant-and unexpected-wintry layover courtesy of a French rail strike. Second, seeing "unseasonable ideas" in the same title as anyone other than Nietzsche raises one's hackles. Third, while the works of Burckhardt enjoy renewed interest among art historians and publishers, he remains largely ignored by "new" cultural and intellectual historians and humanists …
Swiss Families From The Toggenburg And Werdenberg At Home And Abroad: A Genealogical Sketch, Ernest W. Alther
Swiss Families From The Toggenburg And Werdenberg At Home And Abroad: A Genealogical Sketch, Ernest W. Alther
Swiss American Historical Society Review
During past centuries the moving due to marriage of Toggenburg and Werdenberg families within the region or across borders to neighboring countries can often be observed. Lichtensteig, Wil, and the town of St. Gallen were drawing points for commerce and business for the people of the Toggenburg, and moving across the Swiss border is documented already in the sixteenth century from and to W erdenberg and Appenzell, as shown by moves of families such as Alther, Gantenbein, Giezendanner, and Steiner. They were leaving not only for other European countries but also for overseas, especially to regions that became part of …

Review: Bertrand Piccard And Brian Jones, Around The World In 20 Days: The Story Of Our History-Making Balloon Flight, Cheryl R. Ganz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Around the World in 20 Days is a compelling personal narrative by the two pilots who first circumnavigated the globe by balloon in 1999 in the Breitling Orbiter 3. Having failed in his first two attempts to conquer this one remaining aeronautical challenge of twentieth century, Swiss psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard invited British flight instructor Brian Jones to join him for the ultimate adventurer's project. Together they assembled a working team of corporate representatives, aviation controllers, meteorologists, friends, and family who spent years in preparation for the balloon launch from Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland in the winter of 1999. Five other …

The Romans Commentaries Of William Of St. Thierry And Peter Abelard: A Theological And Methodological Comparison, Steven R. Cartwright
The Romans Commentaries Of William Of St. Thierry And Peter Abelard: A Theological And Methodological Comparison, Steven R. Cartwright
Dissertations
In 1140, William o f St. Thierry, a Cistercian monk and former Benedictine abbot, accused Peter Abelard, the well-known philosopher and theologian, of propagating grave errors concerning Christian doctrine in his theological teachings. William’s accusations resulted in Peter’s condemnation at the Council of Sens in 1140.
This study compares the commentaries on the Episode of St. Paul to the Romans written by William of St. Thierry and Peter Abelard in the mid-1130s, only a few years before William’s accusations. While this conflict has been much studied, no one has previously examined it via these commentaries, which are the only literary …
Court, Clients And Kingship: A Study Of Royal Executive Style During The Reign Of James I, Nick Jon Ziegler
Court, Clients And Kingship: A Study Of Royal Executive Style During The Reign Of James I, Nick Jon Ziegler
History Theses & Dissertations
The thesis explores James Stuart's distinct style of kingship as a self-proclaimed absolute monarch whose writings, speeches and public image belied his intention to rule moderately for the welfare of his subjects. The king's reign is analyzed with regard to his ideas on monarchy and government, ecclesiastical policies, problems with clientage, relations with favourites and court culture. Both in Scotland and England, James' writings reveal his static approach to governing key institutions of church and state. The Jacobean court served as the locus of state political power as well as royal patronage, thus drawing many suitors for public offices and …
The Search For Vinland: Reconciling Literature And Archaeology, Clifford W. Anderson
The Search For Vinland: Reconciling Literature And Archaeology, Clifford W. Anderson
History Theses & Dissertations
It is now generally accepted that Columbus was not the first white European to have visited or attempted colonization of North America. It is also generally accepted that the only hard evidence available on the subject suggests that Norse settlers made the first attempt around 1000 CE. The term most often associated with the Norse settlement in question is "Vinland." However, several scholars are unwilling to associate Vinland with the location of the relevant archaeological find at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland. Utilizing an analysis of the two sagas that refer to the settlement and an authentication of the cartographical evidence, …
