Iii. Switzerland And The Era, Hanna Widrig

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

A little over a year ago the Swiss voters surprised the world with the acceptance of a referendum that added an equal rights amendment to the Swiss Federal Constitution. Is there an explanation for this sudden change of the rather conservative Swiss heart? Why was it that the Swiss equal rights amendment passed within the short span of ten years after Swiss women got the right to vote, when American women who have been enfranchised since 1921 were unsuccessful in the same pursuit? What was the Swiss strategy for this outcome, and what has been done in the past year …

Ii. Karl Herzog, The Historian As Activist: An Episode From The Time Of The Sonderbund, Sabine Jessner

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The Swiss historian Karl Herzog was one of the innumerable middle-class intellectuals who exercised an influential role on European liberal politics in the first half of the nineteenth century. Many scholars have analyzed the participation of the bourgeoisie in political life, and they reach novel definitions concerning membership of this intellectual group within the middle class. Historians such as Robert R. Palmer, Alfred Cobban, L.C.B. Seaman and Lenore O'Boyle have devoted particular attention to this concern. For example, the British historian Seaman has cautioned his readers to substitute the expression "professional classes" or "liberal professions" wherever he encounters the word, …

Germany, Mexico, And The United States, 1911-1917, John Joseph Leffler Jul 1982

Germany, Mexico, And The United States, 1911-1917, John Joseph Leffler

Dissertations and Theses

The thesis focuses on Germany's Mexican policies from 1911 to 1917, with particular attention given to the connection of these policies to political relations between the United States and Germany and between the United States and Mexico. The paper also attempts to place German activities in Mexico within the context of Germany's desire to promote its political and economic interests on a worldwide scale. Although some unpublished sources were consulted, the account relies mostly on published documents, memoirs, and secondary sources for its factual basis.

After a brief discussion of trends in German-Amercan relations during the years leading up to …

The Historical Development Of The Radical Anabaptist Movement, 1525-1535, Ronald Edward Sawyer Jul 1982

The Historical Development Of The Radical Anabaptist Movement, 1525-1535, Ronald Edward Sawyer

History Theses & Dissertations

The Anabaptist movement has been judged unfairly as a radical religious sect that brought destruction and chaos to sixteenth century continental European society. this judgment is based upon the events which occurred at Munster, 1534-35, when a group of Radical Anabaptists under the leadership of Jan Matthys and Jan Brockelson forcibly ruled the city.

This thesis shows that the actions and beliefs of the Radical Anabaptists at Munster represent only a small fraction of the Anabaptist movement. Much of this misunderstanding is due to the problem of defining and categorizing the Anabaptists. This study resolves the problem by tracing the …

Kazakh Nationalism In The Gorbachev Era, Steven O'Neal Sabol Jul 1982

Kazakh Nationalism In The Gorbachev Era, Steven O'Neal Sabol

History Theses & Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study is to survey specific manifestations of Kazakh nationalism in the Gorbachev era and ask what provoked a seemingly cooperative people to exert their nationalist sentiment. The two principal forms examined are the passage of the Kazakh Language Law in 1989, and the emergence of informal groups and alternative political parties in Kazakhstan.

The nationalism that was expressed by Kazakhs in the Gorbachev era was a resumption of the nationalism that was suspended or suppressed during seventy years of Soviet rule. The December 1986 demonstration in Alma-Ata irreparably altered ethnic relations in the republic and …

Research Note: The Present Situation In Poland, Chester Nowak May 1982

Research Note: The Present Situation In Poland, Chester Nowak

Bridgewater Review

For almost two years now the whole world has been watching with fascination the development of the present crisis in Poland that was preceded by economic difficulties brought about by Premier Edward Gierek’s economic program. Gierek attempted to revitalize the Polish economy and modernize Polish industry by borrowing heavily from the West in order to pay for more advanced western technology. His initial plan seemed viable; however, it failed largely because of the mismanagement and the corruptive practices of the party’s bureaucrats. Consequently, as a result of the growing indebtedness to the West, Poland had to increase its exports at …

The Contributions Of Robert Grosseteste And Roger Bacon To The Development Of The Scientific Method At Oxford, Isabel Charles Duncan Hatchett Apr 1982

The Contributions Of Robert Grosseteste And Roger Bacon To The Development Of The Scientific Method At Oxford, Isabel Charles Duncan Hatchett

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Robert Grosseteste and Roger Bacon were instrumental in bringing about the use of experimental science and inductive reasoning at Oxford University, and in making science and mathematics a central part of intellectual thought. Grosseteste introduced the experimental method and Bacon assured its survival, amplifying Grosseteste's ideas and passing them on, His role was as important to science and mathematics as was Grosseteste's innovation.

The scientific thoughts of these men differed radically from the accepted medieval approach. They used mathematics and experimentation in their studies and worked with theories of science and education in developing their ideas. They examined science in …

A Sampler, Carl Hansen Jan 1982

A Sampler, Carl Hansen

The Bridge

Note: Seventy years after his death the Danish-born writer Carl Hansen (1860-1916) remains, among those who read Danish, a highly valued interpreter of the immigrant experience in the United States. Hansen was the subject of two articles in earlier issue (Vol. 2:1, 1979) of The Bridge. His short stories and one novel are together a landmark in the American literature written in Danish , but the books have become inaccessible to many and, as to language, closed to a large audience who would appreciate his ability to sketch Danish-American personalities and lives. In Tyler, Minnesota, where he lived until 1910, …

Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen Jan 1982

Danish Farmers In The Middle West, Erik Helmer Pedersen

The Bridge

A former Danish carpenter and farmer, Niels Madsen, his wife, Anna, and their six children, aged 15 to 3 years, were among the passengers on board the America wooden paddle-steamer "Northern Light" when the ship on May 1, 1869, left Copenhagen. It was bound for New York, but enroute it had to call at Gothenburg in Sweden and Christiana in Norway. The Madsen family had left their native village of Klippinge at Stevns, in the company of about 30 other emigrants, headed by a so-called "yankee," Mr. A. Clausen, who during the spring of 1869 had formed an emigration group. …

Louis Pio In America, Thorvald Hansen Jan 1982

Louis Pio In America, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

Since I have been working with the Danish Immigrant Archives, and especially with the Danish Immigrant Archival Listing project, it has become increasingly clear to me that those immigrants who become a part of the Danish Church represent but a small fraction of the Danes who came to this country. Sometime in the Danish Church we have, I fear, been so wrapped up in ourselves that we have lost sight of the great majority of Danes who emigrated to America and who, in one way or another have left their mark. Examples are numerous but I think of one little …

Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947), Ursula Schoeni Jan 1982

Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (1878-1947), Ursula Schoeni

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Ramuz, Charles-Ferdinand (1878-1947), Swiss poet, novelist, and essayist, was born at Cully, a small town on Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud. After completing his studies at the University of Lausanne, he went to Paris, where, from 1902 to 1914, he lived in obscurity and wrote four volumes of poetry in addition to eight novels and two collections of short stories, none of which attracted attention outside a small circle of friends and admirers. Longing for an atmosphere truly congenial to his artistic temperament, he decided to go back to his native Cully. This proved to be a momentous …

Albin Zollinger (1895-1949), Rolf Kieser

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Zollinger, Albin (1895-1949), Swiss poet, novelist, and essayist, was born in Rüti, canton Zürich, where he spent his life as a schoolteacher. Zollinger is probably the greatest lyric poet in 20th century Swiss-German literature. His poetical style shows a genuine relationship to the styles of Georg Trakl, Gottfried Benn, Wilhelm Lehmann, and Peter Huchel.

Introduction To The Special Newsletter Issue On Albert Gallatin, 1761-1849, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This is the second time the Swiss American Historical Society devotes one of its Newsletters to Albert Gallatin. In April 1967 (Vol. III, No. 2), on the occasion of the issue of the l ¾ cent stamp dedicated to Gallatin (in Gallatin , Missouri, on January 30, 1967), we published two articles, one by Ambassador Felix Schnyder and one by Dr. Leo Schelbert, then assistant professor of history at Rutgers University, on the great Genevan-American. Now fifteen years later, we present another issue, with four contributions on our illustrious compatriot and fellow-immigrant. There is no special event or anniversary to …

Jacob Maag (1881-1980), Swiss Stone Carver And Sculptor In The Midwest, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Jacob Maag was born in Neunkirch, Canton Schaffhausen, in 1881 and came to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1905. From 1905 to 1961 he worked as a stonecutter and sculptor mainly in Omaha, but also in other parts of the Midwest. In 1962 he became the subject of an oral history project of the Greater Omaha Historical Society as a "pioneer citizen" in their "I Remember" series. The Greater Omaha Historical Society is now defunct, but thanks to Walter Wullschleger (see SAHS Newsletter, XVI, No. 1 (Jan. 1980), 31-36) we received a transcript of that interview. We are pleased to give the …
