Celebrating 85 Years Of Diversity At Old Dominion University, Steven Bookman

This poster documents the research process and results of a project pertaining to the history of diversity at Old Dominion University from its founding to the present. Photographs, university records and publications, and secondary sources were used to piece together a timeline of important events. The project involved documenting topics related to gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, distance learning, and military affiliations that make up the diverse population of Old Dominion University. The results of the research were put into an Omeka digital exhibit that can be found at: http://exhibits.lib.odu.edu/exhibits/show/celebrating-diversity-and-incl/introduction

The article discusses the Italian American collection at the University of Minnesota Immigration History Research Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Information at http://ihrc.umn.edu/research/ is noted. Aspects of the history of the center noted include the role of Rudolph Vecoli as its founding director, the archives of the fraternal organization Order Sons of Italy (OSIA), and microfilms of newspapers such as the socialist "Il Proletario" and the anarchist "Cronaca Sovversiva," which are related to Italian American labor history.

American perceptions of Italy and Italians between 1861 and 1881 were characterized by competing and conflicting images. These two decades in the late­ nineteenth century demonstrated the transitional nature of American attitudes towards Italians as contact between the two peoples increased. American travelers went to Italy initially to recreate the journeys of educated Europeans of the Grand Tours of the eighteenth century. By the 1860s this style of travel was on the decline to be replaced by traveling based on exploring the "real" Italy. This thesis examines the historical literature regarding the Oneida Community (1848-81) from the society's conceptual beginnings in the 1830s to the present time. After an overview of the antebellum communitarian movement in the United States, a detailed description of the Oneida Community, one of America's most prominent nineteenth-century utopian experiments, is presented.

This thesis seeks to determine the type of society existing in Edinburgh during the first four decades of the sixteenth century. It states the problems faced by the city and examines the role of the magistrates and burgh government in dealing with these problems.

Edinburgh was faced with litterbugs, wandering pets, arguments between citizens and other minor nuisances known even to modern cities. She also faced the more serious prob­lems of maintaining sanitary conditions, establishing a sound treasury, renovating areas suffering from urban blight, and apprehending and punishing criminals.
