Radical Academia: Beyond The Audit Culture Treadmill, Rowan Cahill, Terry Irving
Radical Academia: Beyond The Audit Culture Treadmill, Rowan Cahill, Terry Irving
Rowan Cahill
The pathos of radical academia: notes on the impact of neo-liberalism on the universities, especially the audit culture, the production-model, casualization, academic scholarship, academic writing, peer reviewing, and open access. The authors suggest ways scholars can be radical within, and outside, of neoliberal academia. Part I, 'Missing in Action' appeared as an Academia.edu session in May 2015, where it attracted many comments. Part II, 'What Can Be Done?' is the authors' response to these comments. The whole piece was posted on the Cahill/Irving blog 'Radical Sydney/Radical History' on 22 October 2015.

Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould
Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould
Rebecca Gould
During the final decade of his productive life, Moshe Gammer (1950-2013) edited the first major English-language series on Daghestani philology. This chapter examines key aspects of Gammer’s legacy, while offering an overview of Daghestani philology from the colonial period to the present, and outlining how this field of inquiry enables us to revise regnant paradigms concerning language, law, and the circulation of culture within contemporary Islamic Studies. I concentrate on the potential of Daghestan’s Islamic archives to contribute to the study of linguistic and legal modernity, transregional Arabic in its interface with the vernacular, and the multiplicity of Islamic modernities. …

Now a document of historical interest and significance, this is the foundation manifesto of the Free University, Sydney. Conducted in rented premises in Redfern and nearby inner-Sydney suburbs, this utopian education experiment ran from December 1967 until it closed in 1972. At its height, during the Summer of 1968-1969, some 300 people were involved.

ISBN 9789860235418 209 pages, bibliography, index) is a collection of articles about sociological and literary aspects of identity formation as a consequence of (im)migration. Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert Forbes
Secular Damnation: Thomas Jefferson And The Imperative Of Race, Robert Forbes
Robert P Forbes
Race, we are told, is a “social construction.” If this is so, Thomas Jefferson was its principal architect. Jefferson consciously framed his only published book, Notes on the State of Virginia, to check the rising status of Africans and to combat growing critiques of slavery from America’s European friends. Jefferson did this by importing the slaveholder’s sense of slaves as chattel into an Enlightenment world view, providing a metaphysical foundation for prejudice by transmuting the traditional Christian concept of the saved vs. the damned into material and aesthetic terms. Recasting in quasi-scientific language the ancient doctrine of the mark …

A People's History Of Baseball, Mitchell J. Nathanson
Mitchell J Nathanson
Baseball is much more than the national pastime. It has become an emblem of America itself. From its initial popularity in the mid-nineteenth century, the game has reflected national values and beliefs and promoted what it means to be an American. Stories abound that illustrate baseball's significance in eradicating racial barriers, bringing neighborhoods together, building civic pride, and creating on the field of play an instructive civics lesson for immigrants on the national character. In A People's History of Baseball, Mitchell Nathanson probes the less well-known but no less meaningful other side of baseball: episodes not involving equality, patriotism, heroism, …

Diabolical Frivolity Of Neoliberal Fundamentalism, Sefik Tatlic

Today, we cannot talk just about plain control, but we must talk about the nature of the interaction of the one who is being controlled and the one who controls, an interaction where the one that is “controlled” is asking for more control over himself/herself while expecting to be compensated by a surplus of freedom to satisfy trivial needs and wishes. Such a liberty for the fulfillment of trivial needs is being declared as freedom. But this implies as well the freedom to choose not to be engaged in any kind of socially sensible or politically articulated struggle.
