The President’s Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion began its work in October 2020, charged with advising “the President and members of the President’s Cabinet on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion at [UM] and [UMM] and to provide an annual report to the President on the status and efforts to ensure that inclusive excellence is foundational at the University.”

In this lecture, Ambeth Ocampo sheds light on the Magellan and Lapu-Lapu of collective Philippine imagination, and discusses how history can be used as a tool for both inclusion and exclusion.
Speaker: Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late nineteenth-century Philippines: its art, culture, and the heroes who figure in the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read Editorial Page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and moderates a growing Facebook Fan Page. In 1960, the newly independent Congo erupted into civil war. Belgium, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union all rushed to influence the outcome. Congo sits atop some of the richest mineral deposits in the world; it was a critical Cold War battleground. The CIA came to the aid of one of the warring parties: the rebel state of Katanga. One of the critical ways they aided Katanga was by supplying otherwise unavailable weaponry. I focus on one instance of arms smuggling in particular: when three fighter jet aircraft were smuggled to the rebel Katangan regime. Historians have not …

Karen Sieber Speaks About Hidden History Of Violence At Umaine, Megan Ashe

On Tuesday Dec. 1, 2020, Karen Sieber, the Humanities Specialist at the Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center, presented a talk called “Tarred and Feathered: UMaine’s Hidden Connection to the Red Summer of 1919.” The Red Summer occurred during the year of 1919 and was in reference to nationwide widespreadviolence against Black people, but particularly Black men. Sieber is a historian and specializes in both public history and the digital humanities. This experiencecombined with her own thirst for knowledge led her to begin to create an archive to document this time in history after a trip to Knoxville, Tennessee.
