Senior Project submitted to The Division of Social Studies of Bard College. This thesis is an examination of various factors inhibiting effective American public diplomacy. A unique case study, American public diplomacy operationalized through educational and cultural exchanges, radio broadcasting and American cultural centers and libraries and implemented through American public diplomacy agencies such as the World War II era Office of War Information and the Cold War era United States Information Agency has been an effective tool for pursuing U.S. foreign policy objectives. Understanding Iran: Attempts At Unravelling The Structures That Determine Iranian State Behaviour, Simran Gupta

The goal of this paper is to determine if Iran is a rational actor and to determine the basis of its rationality. If Iran is categorized as an unpredictable and unreliable state, more coercive and isolation based foreign policy decisions would make the most sense. However, if an effort is made to understand the state’s rationality there can be more effective policies that would be more likely to produce the behavior policymakers desire without causing more instability in the international community.

The Decline Of Liberal Democracy: The Case Of Hungary, David Louis Vogel

This paper analyzes the reasons behind the decline of liberal democracy that Hungary is currently experiencing. Specifically this study analyzes the effects of the transition from communism to democracy and how those changes negatively affected a large degree of the population and turned them away from democracy. The decline in living standards and wages and increasing inequality were associated with democracy and enabled right wing populists such as Viktor Orban to come to power.

French Classicism in Four Painters: Where It Went and Why is an analytical approach to the history of classicism and its definitions since being proposed as a style by the ancient Greeks. This paper looks to artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Jacques-Louis David, Charles le Brun, and Eugène Delacroix to understand the evolution of the style’s interpretations within France between the 16th and 19th century.

Edo In The Manga World: Appare Jipangu! And Early Modern Japanese Literature, Parker Christian Cassidy

This project offers a complete translation of the first volume of the Japanese manga Appare Jipangu! by Yuu Watase. An essay that examines the relationship between the manga's own content and the literature of the Edo period, and an exploration the author’s intentions behind having her story set in that particular time follows the translation. With the historical content in the manga and the general format of manga, the translation of Watase’s work created more intense challenges in naturalizing the original Japanese, some requiring new methods of translation to be utilized. Understanding where you come from is never a linear experience. I began this project with the urge to dispel the cinematic portrayal of a romanticized and glorified ‘wild west’ and instead, I spent the last eleven months deciphering the stories and myths I was exposed to throughout my life by my family; perpetuated by the film industry. Growing up, I was told tales of the Bixby Ranch, a thousand-acre ranch in the middle of the Sonoran Desert that my grandfather worked, just as his father had done before. Land In South Africa: Dispossession, Constitutionalism, Political Expediency, Dylan Anton Sparks

This project explores the political history of land dispossession in twentieth century South Africa. It conducts a comprehensive analysis of the legal mechanisms and public policies articulated in the democratic era to address the dark history of dispossession and land theft. It concludes with the suggestion that the resurgence of land in the contemporary political debate questions the legitimacy of the democratic transition and Constitution, when, in fact, the political establishment bears a large responsibility for the glacial pace of land reform over the first twenty-five years of democracy.
