[Excerpt] The private sector clerical work force is largely nonunion, simultaneously offering the labor movement a major source of potential membership growth and an extremely difficult challenge. Based on December 1990 data, there are eighteen million workers employed in office clerical, administrative support, and related occupations. Eighty percent of these employees are women, accounting for 30 percent of all women in the labor force. Among private sector office workers, 57 percent work in the low-union-density industry groups of services (only 5.7 percent union) and finance, insurance, and real estate (only 2.5 percent union). From Subject To Citizen: Tarleton Bates And Evolution Of Republican Man On The Pennsylvania Frontier, Leo Jon Grogan

This dissertation is written as a microhistory, and it focuses on the life, career, and death of Tarleton Bates, third Prothonotary of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Bates was born in Virginia, but he left in 1794 as a soldier in the Virginia militia to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion. Bates decided to remain in Pittsburgh, where he became an influential leader of the local Republican Party. His politics eventually involved him in a number of disputes, and in 1806 he was forced to fight a duel with a local merchant named Thomas Stewart. Led by noted Irish statesman Eamon de Valera, a cadre of former members of the militaristic republican organization Sinn Féin split to form Fianna Fáil with the intent to reconstitute Irish republicanism so as to fit within the democratic frameworks of the Irish Free State. Beginning with its formation in 1926, up through the passage of a republican constitution in 1937 that was recognized by Great Britain the following year, Fianna Fáil had successfully rescued the seemingly moribund republican movement from complete marginalization. Using gendered language to forge a nexus between primordial cultural nationalism and modernity, Fianna Fáil's nationalist project …

This thesis explores how the complex interplay between gender and technology significantly shaped the popularization of commercial aviation in the United States during the 1920s and 30s. As technological innovations improved both the safety and efficiency of airplanes during the early part of the twentieth century, commercial aviation industries increasingly worked to position flight as a viable means of mass transportation. In order to win the trust and money of potential passengers, however, industry proponents recognized the need to separate flight from its initial association with danger and masculine strength by convincing the general public of aviation’s safety and reliability. …

In the fall of 1969, as a result of the creation of a separate men’s college, Lindenwood College became faced with the problem of intervisitation, the issue of allowing men and women to visit each other in their dorm rooms. The problems of intervisitation at Lindenwood would illustrate the complexities many college administrations experienced with the doctrine of In loco parentis, a Latin term school administrations used to regulate the morals of students. America’s changing social mores forced universities to confront students who demanded control over matters concerning their personal lives, including sexual relations between men and women.

Between 1850 and 1880, Americans obsessed over cross-dressing women. Many women donned the breeches: ruined young daughters of respectable families, honest but poor girls looking for a living, and unseemly women who wished either to explore public places or prostitute themselves. This huge variation in station and intention of cross-dressing women allows an exploration of Victorian identity markers -- not just gender, but also race, class, and respectability. Many of these young ladies were described as Romantic adventurers -- they had heroic and beautiful, but often ultimately tragic, experiences. By studying the social reaction to these individuals, we discover that …

This essay introduces a special journal issue bringing together the well-established field of racial-ethnic and immigration history in the U.S. with the less visible but just as strong and growing field of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) and “queer” history and culture, essays exploring race and ethnicity, immigration and nation, and gender, sex, and sexuality as they inform one another, as well as the making of identities, historical subjects, communities, and policy. Male Same-Sex Relations In Modern China: Language, Media Representation, And Law, 1900–1949, Wenqing Kang

The article discusses the tension in the Chinese indigenous terminology for male same-sex relations which was similar to Eve Sedgwich's description of the Western modern homosexual/heterosexual definition. It argues that the Western sexological concept of homosexuality was accepted in the early 20th century China and notes that its legal apparatus had no clear stipulations on sex between men. It indicates how writers during the first half of the 20th century were more concerned with the proper gender behavior and the image of the nation than sex itself.
