Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price Dec 1973

Black Response To Anti-Semitism: Negroes And Jews In New York, 1880 To World War Ii, Isabel Boiko Price

History ETDs

This study examines the presumption that black antipathy to the Jews represents a recent and tragic shift in Negro-Jewish relations in New York City. Through research into written material supplemented by oral interviews, it attempts to examine attitudes, encounters, and situations which shed light on the history of Negro-Jewish relations from 1880 to 1943. The study begins during the closing years of the 19th century when large numbers of East European Jews and the van- guard of southern blacks both made their exodus to New York.

The Negro's first response to the Jew was to notice a parallel with his …

Diaries And Reminiscences Of Women On The Oregon Trail: A Study In Consciousness, Amy Kesselman Dec 1973

Diaries And Reminiscences Of Women On The Oregon Trail: A Study In Consciousness, Amy Kesselman

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an attempt to discover how women participating in the mid-nineteenth century migration to Oregon viewed the westward journey and themselves in relationship to it. It is not a survey of the responses of all women in the westward movement, but, rather, an exploration of the perspective of those women who left a written record of their perceptions or recollections. The thesis focuses on the diaries and reminiscences of women travelling, primarily but not exclusively, in the years 1851-1853.

The introductory material consists of a review of the existing historical literature on women and the West, and a …

The White Man's Burden, Nelson V. Shaw Dec 1973

The White Man's Burden, Nelson V. Shaw

Honors Theses

This paper is concerned with a broad, general defining of the concept of the "White Man's Burden." There is a brief history given leading up to the "White Man's Burden," with emphasis on the Monroe Doctrine. The three composing factors of the "White Man's Burden" are Christianity, Pragmatism, and Manifest Destiny; they are explained in detail and an attempt has been made to show how they form a cohesive unit, and in turn, a foreign policy. This paper has attempted to show the beginning of American foreign policy with the hopes of better understanding our foreign policy in the 1970's.

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale Nov 1973

The English Public Health Movement, 1838-1848, Rebecca Dale

Honors Theses

Parliament passed its first comprehensive public health act in 1848. Prior to that time Britain as well as other European countries had mostly just tolerated insanitary conditions.

In English medieval towns people threw their garbage onto the narrow streets where animals--pigs, cattle, ducks--roamed, Houses were built with projections over the streets which blocked light and ventilation. There were few qualms about slaughtering animals on the streets. The common method of sewerage was by cesspools which in some cases were built underneath the houses and in most cases were cleaned out only once every several years by the "dust-collectors". Even in …

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts Nov 1973

The Status Of Woman Suffrage In Virginia 1909-1920, Betty C. Pitts

Honors Theses

The woman suffrage movement in Virginia, as in other parts of the nation, must be viewed within the total context of reform which pervaded in the first two decades of the twentieth century in America. The evils associated with the industrial revolution, mass immigration, and the urban crisis produced in the minds of men and women a favorable climate for sweeping sociological changes. Despite the receptive attitudes of individual men and women, the woman suffrage movement could never have been successful without "a heroic mustering of effort....," which has never since been achieved by this same group expect during a …

French-Indian Relations (1672-1701) : An Economic, Political And Military Study, James Duncan Biggs Oct 1973

French-Indian Relations (1672-1701) : An Economic, Political And Military Study, James Duncan Biggs

Dissertations and Theses

This paper concentrates on the political, economic, and military policies of New France (French Canada) towards the Indian tribes inhabiting and bordering New France during the period 1672-1701. It was a period of intensive exploration coupled with the fur trade, principally beaver, both of which activities spurred France to compel its “province” of New France to make alliances with the Indians and to block penetration of the French-claimed area by the English colonists to the south (New York and New England) and to the north (Hudson’s Bay area).

Any research must be concerned with many interacting and conflicting factors: the …

A Political History Of The Poll Tax In Virginia, 1900-1950, Conley L. Edwards Aug 1973

A Political History Of The Poll Tax In Virginia, 1900-1950, Conley L. Edwards

Master's Theses

The poll tax occupies a unique place in Virginia's suffrage history. Basically a twentieth century device ostensibly originated to provide revenue for the state by requiring payment of a fee before the exercise of the franchise, there was probably no other practice quite as foreign to the expanding suffrage traditions of Virginia's history as the poll tax. The only precursor to this tax was a capitation tax levied intermittently, the first such tax appearing in 1623 in the form of a levy of ten pounds of tobacco to meet the debt arising from defenses against local Indians. Free Negroes and …

Lord Birkenhead And The Irish Question, Robert Allen Armistead Kester Aug 1973

Lord Birkenhead And The Irish Question, Robert Allen Armistead Kester

Master's Theses

The life of Frederick Edwin Smith, 1st Earl of Birkenhead (1872- 1930), was fascinating but puzzling. The second Earl of Birkenhead has described his father as "a brilliant failure," a man of tremendous intel ligence and talent who failed to reach the pinnacle of success. Most historians have confirmed this assessment but have added a somewhat sinis ter element to Birkenhead' s career. Birkenhead is generally depicted as a latter-day condottiere, reckless and unprincipled, who used his great gifts in any expedient or demagogic scheme that would advance his career.

This thesis is not a straightforward biography of Birkenhead but …

History Of The Swedish Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1905-1973, Carl Erik Johansson Aug 1973

History Of The Swedish Mission Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints 1905-1973, Carl Erik Johansson

Theses and Dissertations

The study traced major developments in the Swedish Mission. A decided help in this undertaking was the author's own long association with the Mormons in Sweden. The government attempted to prevent Mormon proselyting in the first two decades. This ended in a tacit approval for the Mormons to carry on. The conditions between both world wars induced fairly successful "hold-the-fort" efforts. Youth conferences were especially vital in building a spirit of unity among Swedish Mormons.

The period after the second world war showed several definite trends. Membership increased three-fold to more than 5000. Chapels were acquired. Organizations on the mission …

The World Of Women: Portland, Oregon, 1860-1880, Mary C. Wright

Dissertations and Theses

The primary objective of this study is to find, statistically, how the women of Portland lived out their lives. By exploring the role of ethnicity, work and family, and the inter-relationships of these variables, upon their life choices, it is hoped a picture of women will result that can be used as a base for further interpretations on the community of women and the role they play in society.

The study is based on data gathered from the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth Federal Manuscript Census Schedules for the city of Portland and East Portland and utilizes a sample of 8,012 …

The New England Emigrant Aid Company And The Response In Massachusetts To Its Goals And Efforts To Create A Free Kansas, 1854-1856, Randall R. Butler Ii Aug 1973

The New England Emigrant Aid Company And The Response In Massachusetts To Its Goals And Efforts To Create A Free Kansas, 1854-1856, Randall R. Butler Ii

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A wave of indignation and shock swept over the North following Stephen A. Douglas' introduction of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill in the United States Senate in January, 1854. The South conceded Nebraska to the North, because of the Territory's geographic proximity to Northern transportation routes and the free-state of Iowa. In return, the South expected the North to concede the loss of Kansas as a future slave state. But many Northerners were not willing to assent to this new compromising proposal without a struggle.

Eli Thayer, a freshman Congressman in the Massachusetts State Legislature, invisioned a scheme to use Douglas' concept …

Ernst Cassirer And The Synthesis Of The Past: A Paradigm In The History Of Ideas, Mart Stewart Jul 1973

Ernst Cassirer And The Synthesis Of The Past: A Paradigm In The History Of Ideas, Mart Stewart

Dissertations and Theses

The problem of a method of historical analysis played an integral part in the scholarship of Ernst Cassirer, German philosopher and historian. An Essay on Man, the work for which he is best known in the United State, includes his most lucid discussion of the tasks and aims of the historian. The historian must reconstruct the past, infusing it with the immediacy of a living expression. "Rebirth of the past" gives man a better view of his potentialities, a freedom to see beyond the demands, characteristics, and contingencies of the moment.

This view of history and the historian's task …

The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel Jul 1973

The Origin Of Property In Land: Paul Vinogradoff And The Late Xixth Century English Historians, Caroline Phillips Stoel

Dissertations and Theses

One of the problems which has intrigued English historians for over a hundred years is that of the position of the common man in early England. Was he a freeman working land held communally by the village, or was he a serf laboring upon the land of an overlord? Since this question of freedom is inextricably interwoven with landholding concepts the problem may also be stated another way: Did private property in land exist from the earliest times, or is that institution the result of centuries of appropriation by individuals of land originally belonging to the commmunity as a whole? …

Contributions Of Peter Pallas To Science And Exploration In Russia, Robert C. Parker

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents an account of a prominent eighteenth-century European naturalist, Peter Pallas (1741-1811), in the setting to which he contributed his scientific talents--the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. A complete outline of Pallas' life is presented for purposes of continuity, but the heart of the thesis is presented in chapters four and five, which combined, relate the major features of Pallas' career in Russia. These two chapters are set against pertinent background material, most of which is involved with the institution itself which supported Pallas. The St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences is surveyed in its origin and development in …

American Diplomacy Toward China, 1945-1948, Margo E. Horner Jul 1973

American Diplomacy Toward China, 1945-1948, Margo E. Horner

History Theses & Dissertations

[In lieu of an abstract, here are the final two paragraphs of Preface]

America's relationship toward China during the postwar years was aptly described by President Truman's summary of his China policy: “The role of this government in its relations with China has been subjected to considerable misrepresentation, distortion, and misunderstanding. Some of these attitudes arose because this government was reluctant to reveal certain facts…."8 Admiral William Leahy, Chief of Staff to presidents Roosevelt and Truman, acknowledged that America’s “post-war attitude toward the Government of China is completely beyond understanding.”9 This writer shares these beliefs and deems it …

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts Jun 1973

The Egyptian Question And The Triple Alliance, 1884-1904, Calvin Alexander Roberts

History ETDs

From 1884 to 1904 the Egyptian question arose in the diplomacy of every major European power, affecting their relations toward one another and being affected in turn by their diplomatic stances toward imperial rivalries and within the European power constellation. Egypt itself primarily embroiled Britain and France; but each of the great powers sought leverage through the international nature of Egyptian finances, the problem of the upper Nile, the Suez Canal, and the vestiges of Ottoman suzerainty. The larger Egyptian question, as manifested by these issues, vitally influenced the formation and continuation of European alignments and alliances. The Triple Alliance …

The Diplomatic Stalemate Of Japan And The United States: 1941, David Hoien Overby May 1973

The Diplomatic Stalemate Of Japan And The United States: 1941, David Hoien Overby

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis contends from the time of September 1940 to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States and Japan offered each no workable concessions that might have deterred war. A stalemate was finally established between the two countries. The position of the Japanese nation was to expand and control "Greater East-Asia," while the position the United States held was one that claimed all nations should uphold certain basic principles of democracy, that all nations should honor the sanctity of treaties," and that they should treat neighboring countries in a friendly fashion.

This thesis also contends that Yosuke Matsuoka …

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch May 1973

The Struggle For Religious Freedom Through Separation Of Church And State In Colonial America, Fred E. Schuerch

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The struggle for religious freedom through the separation of church and state in Colonial America is a most important part of our national Christian heritage. Yet, because our living experience is decidedly this side of that struggle, we often fail to understand and thus appreciate the religious liberty it afforded to us. We fail to understand that those who struggled for religious freedom did so to insure that true Christian faith would never be suppressed.

The danger, then, is that in not understanding our religious freedom we lose it. Secure and often complacent in our religious liberty we smile at …

Development Of Irrigation In Wasatch County, Craig Woods Fuller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A primary basis for settlement locations in the great basin by the Mormons was the availability of water. The settlement of Heber Valley was no exception.

Water became quickly involved in two important and determining factors (cooperation and self-reliance) in the development of Mormon society in general and Wasatch County's society in particular. Likewise, these two factors influenced the direction in the development of water as it was utilized by the Mormons to establish the "Kingdom of God" on earth. Cooperation and self-reliance in Wasatch County were changed as modifications within the county were made as well as by other …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper examines the historical process of water resources development in the Bear River Basin and is based on the thesis that the attitudes of Bear River water users towards development reduce to a concern over the scarcity of water or the potential shortage of water. This concern has been a constant and primary focus of water resources development in the Bear River Basin even as water resources technology became increasingly more sophisticated and the legal and political consideration of water resource development became more complex. From the time of the original Mormon settlements in the Bear River Basin Water …

El Viaje De Don Antonio De Pineda Por Territorios Mexicanos, Raquel Limon Castillo May 1973

El Viaje De Don Antonio De Pineda Por Territorios Mexicanos, Raquel Limon Castillo

History ETDs

In the Age of the Enlightenment Europe became concerned with world exploration for scientific reasons. Though Spain was slow to accept the challenge, when that nation finally decided to participate, the Spanish Crown did so with enthusiasm. Between 1789 and 1794 the Ministry of Marine under Antonio Valdes sponsored the scientific exploring expedition "around the world" headed by Captain Alejandro Malaspina and Captain Josi Bustamante y Guerra. One of the important stops of the sixty-two month long exploratory expedition was in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Arriving at Acapulco in 1791, the expedtion temporarily sub-divided to carry out more effectively …
