Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner Dec 1968

Andrew Johnson And The Patronage, James Lewis Baumgardner

Doctoral Dissertations

The Constitution bestows upon the president the right to make appointments "by and with the advice and consent of the Senate" to federal position at home and abroad. Over the passage of time, through free use of this power and the implied power of removal, the several chief executives constructed a vast patronage system, of which one primary goal was to reward the party faithful for their services. The purpose of this dissertation is to determine how well Andrew Johnson, the unexpected successor of Abraham Lincoln, used the seemingly powerful patronage weapon and the reasons why he used it as …

The Public Career Of Joseph Alexander Mabry, Jerome Gregg Taylor Dec 1968

The Public Career Of Joseph Alexander Mabry, Jerome Gregg Taylor

Masters Theses

The aim of this investigation into the career of General Joseph Alexander Mabry has been to determine, if possible, the character of this man who had had such a noteworthy career in Tennessee public affairs. The great majority of the source material used on General Mabry has been from original, contemporary sources, since, to date, there has been little written on him by historians.

The scope of this paper has been limited by necessity to his public activities, as they are the only ones upon which there is any information available. General Mabry's activities as railroad entrepreneur, land owner, politician …

The Great Objector: The Public Career Of Dr. John R. Neal, Bobby E. Hicks Dec 1968

The Great Objector: The Public Career Of Dr. John R. Neal, Bobby E. Hicks

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the life of Dr. John R. Neal. Dr. Neal's life was, for the most part, made up of a series of personal defeats which would have forced many men in similar positions to cease their public activities at an early date. However, Dr. Neal persevered and was unswerving in his devotion to whatever cause he chose to defend, whether it be freedom of the individual or welfare of the state. Actually, he left behind a series of accomplishments for which he has received very little credit, althought his contemporary associates continue to …

Organ Pipes, Donna June Pike Oct 1968

Organ Pipes, Donna June Pike

Honors Theses

Pipes actually came into existence at the creation of the earth. We do not know how much time elapsed before man became observant and discovered that when the wind blew over the end of a bullrush or a bamboo joint it made a sound. Man tried blowing like the wind and discovered he could blow this small natural pipe better than the wind. From there it was only a matter of time before man became ingenious and discovered that tubes of different lengths gave different sounds. Two kinds of flutes developed: the traverse flute held sideways, the player directs the …

Ayn Rand: Her Systematic Appraisal Of The Problems And Challenges Confronting Modern Era, David Clifton Lawson Aug 1968

Ayn Rand: Her Systematic Appraisal Of The Problems And Challenges Confronting Modern Era, David Clifton Lawson

History ETDs

Ayn Rand feels that the world has fallen into the errors of irrationalism. This has left us almost totally bankrupt of any meaningful cultural values. This irrationalism, or abandonment of reason for emotions, has left man wholly out of touch with reality. The irrational syndrome that Miss Rand describes starts with mysticism, or man's irrational metaphysics and epistemology. The first derivative of mysticism is altruism; it mirrors man's irrational personal ethics. After altruism comes collectivism, or man's irrational social ethic. The final stage of this syndrome is statism, man's irrational socio-economic system. Ayn Rand's answer to the world's renunciation of …

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood Aug 1968

The Ku Klux Klan In Grand Forks, William Lathrop Harwood

Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects

During the 1920's the Ku Klux Klan powerfully influenced all levels of government in the United States. For example, its strength helped to elect governors and U.S. Senators in eight states. As a result of Klan efforts, Oregon voters in 1923 approved a measure prohibiting parochial schools from teaching the first eight grades, and Portland Klan candidates won seats on the city commission in the same year.

This thesis is a case study of the Klan's political activities in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the trading center of the fertile wheatlands of the northern Red River Valley. Here, the local Klan …

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson Aug 1968

History Of Fort Pembina 1870-1895, William D. Thomson

Theses and Dissertations

The unsettled status of the Red River Valley during the 1860's made inevitable the establishment of a military post near the 49th Parallel. The Minnesota Uprising in 1862 caused a band of Sioux Indians, responsible for the massacre, to flee to Canada to escape punishment by the military. In 1863, a hastily organized battalion established a temporary fort at Pembina to capture the renegades. After accomplishing its mission, the battalion abandoned the post in 1864.

With the end of the Civil War, people looked to the frontier for fertile lands to settle; but the Indian threat kept them out …

The 1966 Republican Campaign In North Dakota, Joseph Charles Crawford

The 1966 Republican Campaign in North Dakota discusses the efforts of the Party from May, 1965 through November, 1966. Analysis of this effort is made with regard to finances, organization, and research.

The study then discusses the 1966 state convention, the rise of youth in the Party organization, background and insight into all the races, and a complete tabulation of all ballots. Special emphasis is placed on the problem of the John Birch Society and on how that problem was resolved …

The Nonpartisan League : A Quest Of Community, Leonard Wentz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is the examination and appraisal of the rise and decline of the Nonpartisan League as a mass movement in North Dakota. Previous interpretations have been mostly economic in nature. This study interprets the League members I situation from the socio-psychological view. This thesis will attempt to show the editorial directions of leading newspapers with regard to the agrarian situation from 1916 to 1920.

The procedure involved a study of the sociological conditions of the North Dakota farmers before they accepted the Nonpartisan League ideology. The Nonpartisan Leader's editorial policy was viewed to show its interpretation …

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail Jul 1968

Classes And Class Conflicts In Victorian England As Explored By Thomas Hardy, Nancy Burns Vail

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this research was to study in depth the relationships of individuals in the three social classes in England during the Victorian Age. Since original documents and research material were scarce I used two novels by Thomas Hardy to illustrate the conflicts between representatives of the social classes. In 1891 England was prosperous and many people believed there was no conflict between the classes. Thomas Hardy believed this was untrue and, by method of comparison, wrote Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure to prove his point. This thesis includes research on the two novels, Thomas Hardy’s …

British Public Opinion Of The Greek War Of Independence, 1821-1829., Jean Collins Craven Jun 1968

British Public Opinion Of The Greek War Of Independence, 1821-1829., Jean Collins Craven

History ETDs

The purpose of this study was to attempt to understand some of the factors which contributed to British public opinion of the Greek war of Independence, 1821-1829. England was not directly involved in this war, but it nevertheless evoked an intense interest among the British people, particularly during the first five years. Selected newspapers and other periodicals were canvassed for the entire period of the war as a manner of checking the frequency of publication of opinion of the war. Other newspapers and periodicals were sampled for only a few years to determine the type of opinion expressed. In addition, …

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher Jun 1968

Irvin Mcdowell, Storm Center Of Union Command, 1861-1862, Ronald Francis Locher

History ETDs

Irvin McDowell is an important figure of the Civil War era because the role he played made him a storm center within the Union command structure. His career, therefore, is indicative of certain problems encountered by the North which ultimately prolonged the war. Those command problems, which affected overall federal strategy in the early years of the war, largely centered around four areas: unpreparedness, political intrigue, undefined civil/military functions, and cautious generals. Unpreparedness, the bane of the North's military existence during the early stages of the war, was also a hindrance to McDowell for his talents had previously been restricted …

The York River Railroad : 1851-1881, Stuart B. Medlin Jun 1968

The York River Railroad : 1851-1881, Stuart B. Medlin

Master's Theses

The construction of railroads in the State of Virginia was perhaps the single most important economic development that affected the growth of the state. Connecting isolated sections of the state, railroads enabled rural and urban areas to share their respective contributions to the economic prosperity of the common-wealth. Beginning in 1836, when Virginia's first line was constructed, Virginia railroading developed rapidly from 676 3/4 miles in 1851 to 1,954 miles in 1880.

One of the lines that contributed to this economic development was a short thirty-eight mile track that ran from Richmond to West Point at the head of the …

Black Cloud Over Danville: The Negro Movement In Danville, Virginia In 1963, Gordon Brooks Powell Jr.

Master's Theses

It ls the purpose of this work to show how the racial disturbance began and why it came to a close in Danville, Virginia in 1963. This work asks: "Why Danville, what happened, what killed it, and what was the aftermath?" The central vehicle for answering these questions is the Danville Police Department. Research was done, over a period of some fifteen months, through a series of court records and transcripts, interviews, newspapers, observations, books, and other sources related to this topic. It should be pointed out, that in as many cases as possible, this author attempted to determine the …

Elizabethan Foreign Policy : 1567-1585, Jo Anne Reynolds Jun 1968

Elizabethan Foreign Policy : 1567-1585, Jo Anne Reynolds

Master's Theses

The topic of this paper, "Elizabeth Foreign Policy: 1567-1585", evolved from an attempt to analyze Anglo-Spanish relations during the same period. The interrelatedness of the religious and political problems among the major powers of the period led this author frequently into considerations outside the original sphere of interest. While the topic was expanded in scope, it should be noted that the paper attempts to deal only with the more significant factors affecting English foreign policy and not not pretend to illuminate the complex and changing national situations elsewhere. Specific external events are introduced only when they directly affect Elizabeth foreign …

Peddling In Northern Utah As Compared To The Continental United States, Paul J. Nye

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Oral interviews were conducted in Cache Valley pertaining to the goods and services performed by the itinerant peddler as compared with peddling in the continental United States.

Having a large inland lake such as Bear Lake brought about the peddling of fish, similar to that done on the seaboard.

The availability of goods and services rendered by the itinerant in Utah was similar to the goods and services obtainable from earlier United States peddlers.

The History Of College And Young Wards, Cache County, Utah, John A. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The two communities treated in this thesis, College Ward and Young Ward, are located in the southern section of Cache Valley, Utah, in an area originally known as the L.D.S. Church Farm. In 1877, Mormon President Brigham Young gave the Church Farm as an endowment to help build and maintain the newly-created Brigham Young College, and the land was leased, and later sold, to interested settlers.

Although late in settlement, these wards have a history of occupation and development similar to most local Mormon farm communities, and almost without exception have been populated by members of the Church of Jesus …

Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr. Apr 1968

Soviet-U.S. Relations 1917-1957, As Reflected In Soviet Anti-American Graphic Propaganda, William Frederick Alsop Jr.

Graduate Thesis Collection

The present study is an attempt to bring into focus one of the many bases of party power over Soviet citizens. It is no great revelation that the Soviet government has long indulged in anti-American propanda, but the continuity, elaboratness and virulence of ths "crusade of hatred" demands further study. It is essential that such study be undertaken parallel with an appraisal of Soviet-American relations since 1917.

In outlining the chronological development of anti-American libel campaign, some space will be devoted to methodology, technology and apparent purposes of the Soviet propagandists. Space limitations preclude an elaborate study of Soviet propaganda …

A Study Of Political And Sectional Voting Alignments In The United States Senate, 1921-1929, Patrick Gene O'Brien Jan 1968

A Study Of Political And Sectional Voting Alignments In The United States Senate, 1921-1929, Patrick Gene O'Brien

Wayne State University Dissertations

Several common and casual assertions about "twenties" politics should come under critical reanalysis, including traditional descriptions of the extent and character of party division. The usual historical generalization is that, although conservativism was the predominant political attitude, both parties were fragmented by sectional and ideological struggles. As a con sequence there was a breakdown in the party system. This dissertation tests this conclusion through an examination of voting patterns in the United States Senate from the 67th through the 70th Congress (1921-29), Virtually every political history of the era touches upon Senate voting alignments, but there is no extant study …
