The Composition Of History: A Critical Point Of View Of Michel Foucault's Archaeology, Javier Gálvez Aguirre
The Composition Of History: A Critical Point Of View Of Michel Foucault's Archaeology, Javier Gálvez Aguirre
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The author discusses in "The composition of History: a critical point of view of Michel Foucault's archaeology" a very specific aspect within the work of Foucault: the role of the philosophies of history in the composition of historical discourse. The philosophies of history of pre-revolutionary Europe were able to show a discursive continuity that does not tally with the discontinuities that are sought in Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical project. The question that is asked following the analyses of these discourses does not fully escape from the analyses of the knowledge-power apparatuses: how is it possible that the practical-political nature of …

Understanding Muhammad's Interaction With The Church, Devonte Narde
Understanding Muhammad's Interaction With The Church, Devonte Narde
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
My research focuses on understanding Muhammad’s (the Islamic prophet) interaction with what he perceived to be the Christian church to find out why his understanding of Biblical narratives and theology is incorrect. With this information, Christians should reintroduce Christian scripture and theology to Muslims since Muhammad’s rejection of Christian doctrine is based on associating wrong texts as authoritative Christian teaching. The following questions that shape this research are: What possible sources did Muhammad use to learn about biblical narratives and themes? What did the first Muslims think about the canonical gospels of Jesus? How did early Muslims view the teachings …

The War To End All Wars On Ideal Female Figures: An Analysis Of Wwi And Its Effects On U.S. Women's Fashion From 1917-1927, Ayrika Johnson
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This paper looks at fashion in America prior to, during, and after WWI to give a more holistic understanding of how war affected women's fashion. It will argue the trend towards the Flapper and "New Woman" movement were directly connected to war and how it affected women in the early 1900s. The paper will look specifically at propaganda posters and magazine ads from the time period to argue the correlation, as well as utilize supplemental material from U.S. and fashion historians.
Fashion Under The Swastika: An Analysis Of Women's Fashion During The Third Reich, Ayrika Johnson
Fashion Under The Swastika: An Analysis Of Women's Fashion During The Third Reich, Ayrika Johnson
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
This paper works to demonstrate women's fashion in Germany during WWII and how it was impacted by Nazi culture. Within Hitler's Germany, there was a desire to create a uniform community separate from the rest of the world, and greater than all others. Fashion is one way to analyze how the Nazis tried to accomplish this goal. The paper relies on speeches, magazines, and their fashion pages, and advertisement clippings to uncover the social, economic, and political factors at play. By using fashion as a means of expressing cultural, societal, economic, and political goals, the desires of the Nazi government …

Hark Upon The Gayle: A Depiction Of The Experiences Of The First Women Students At William & Mary, Yi Hao, Lisa Milne
The William & Mary Educational Review
As William & Mary celebrates the 100th anniversary of admitting women students as the first public college in Virginia to institute a co-educational system, this paper explores the life and times of the women who have shaped the College’s legacy for future women students. In researching the first women at William & Mary, we have found historical documentation, such as personal papers (letters and surveys) from both women students of the class of 1918 and a prior researcher; the Flat Hat, a student-run newspaper at the College; meeting minutes from the College Board of Visitors; William & Mary President Lyon …
Rewriting History: A Study Of How The History Of The Civil War Has Changed In Textbooks From 1876 To 2014, Skyler A. Campbell
Rewriting History: A Study Of How The History Of The Civil War Has Changed In Textbooks From 1876 To 2014, Skyler A. Campbell
The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era
History textbooks provide an interesting perspective into the views and attitudes of their respective time period. The way textbooks portray certain events and groups of people has a profound impact on the way children learn to view those groups and events. That impact then has the potential to trickle down to future generations, fabricating a historical narrative that sometimes avoids telling the whole truth, or uses selective wording to sway opinions on certain topics. This paper analyzes the changes seen in how the Civil War is written about in twelve textbooks dated from 1876 to 2014. Notable topics of discussion …
Shostakovich’S Fourth And Fifth Symphonies: A Comparative Analysis, Payden Taylor
Shostakovich’S Fourth And Fifth Symphonies: A Comparative Analysis, Payden Taylor
Tenor of Our Times
The Fourth and Fifth Symphonies of Dmitri Shostakovich were written less than two years apart, but bear two incredibly different structures and tonal palettes. The former was shelved for decades and the latter was released to worldwide praise. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the unique circumstances that led to the two disparate fates of these pieces of music. It will investigate the political climate of the Soviet Union in the 1930s and the musical influences which affected Shostakovich and his oeuvre, speculating the purposes behind Shostakovich's change in approach between symphonies over the course of 1936 and …

Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins
Early Republican Motherhood Through Eliza Pinckney, Taylor V. Wilkins
Tenor of Our Times
Elizabeth Lucas Pinckney was the exception to many social norms in her day and has been praised over the decades for her life work. She pioneered planting techniques and natural remedies, as well as kept a letter book that detailed her life, and raised children that also played key roles in changing their world. While some might contend that Pinckney was not a Republican Mother because she was not active during the post-revolutionary war time, that does not discredit her life from being characterized by the term. Rather, Pinckney was an early example of a Republican mother because of her …

Assistant professor of history Dr. Shawn Fisher wrote a travel report on his time in Europe during the spring 2017 semester. He spent three months in Italy with the Harding University in Florence program. His visit to the beaches of Normandy led to reflections on the history of World War II and how the lessons of sacrifice learned there should be passed down to younger generations.

Madison Historical Review
The Editorial Board of the Madison Historical Review is proud to present the fifteenth volume of our annual publication of graduate historical research. We are excited by the number of works we received this year that all show the vast amount of scholarship being produced across the country by our peers. The Madison Historical Review serves as one of the only graduate student-operated journals that features the works of our fellow historians-in-training. This year, the journal features three articles that cover vastly different aspects of the past, and help to convey the wide array of current historical scholarship being produced …
Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
Engagement In The History Classroom: Problem-Based Learning And Primary Sources, Lauren Seghi
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Too often today, students have to sit idly in a history classroom listening to a lecture or reading out of a textbook which is why many people in society (adults and children alike) do not like or understand the complexity of history. This article argues that in order for students to be engaged in "doing" history in the classroom, they need to take part in problem-based learning (pbl) activities using primary sources from the past.

Forgotten Soldiers: Burials On The Texas Frontier And Shifting Perceptions Of Military Interment, Anthony Schienschang Ii
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
This research examines the interrelation between civilian and military burials on the Texas frontier in the 1850s with further discussion about the drivers for changing military burial practices. A soldier’s life on the Texas frontier is briefly outlined along with some of the difficulties facing service members living in border forts. Special focus is placed on examining the socio-economic differences between officers and enlisted personnel, as well as the recording of deaths on the frontier. As a case study, the condition of the proposed location of the Fort Gates cemetery is explored and brief analysis of data gathered from the …
