A Raeto-Romance Language And Literature Course In Rumein, Surselva, Grisons From June 24 To July 11, 1969

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

As a Professor of Median and Minor Romance Languages at the University of North Carolina, Professor Maissen occupies a unique position for fostering interest in the Raeto-Romance language of his native Grisons. This center of comparative :ttemtures and linguistics enables him to use Raeto-Romance as a key for the understanding of the whole language group related to it, from Catalan to Rumanian. Despite of its small territory, Raeto-Romance, because of the consciousness with which our compatriots in the Grisons defend this linguistic heritage, plays a crucial role in these studies .

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

One of the main purposes of the Swiss American Historical Society and of its Newsletter is to draw the attention of Swiss and friends of Switzerland, who are interested in Swiss American history and cultural relations, to recent publications in this field. We again have a good occasion to do this. Professor Leo Schelbert, our Secretary, has kindly arranged for us reprints of his recent article on the emigration of the Swiss Mennonites to America (see under II.). Our member Fritz Blum has given us copies of a special issue on Switzerland of the New York paper for which he …

Special Issue "Willkommen In Der Schweis" Of The N.Y. Staats-Zeitung U. Herold Of July 28th. 1968

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

We owe this gift to our member Fritz Blum in New York who collected the material for this special issue. Even if he does not like to admit it in his modesty, he obviously has been the driving force behind this enterprise. We should like to draw your special attention to the interviews on pages 10 and 11 with 12 Swiss graphic artists working in the New York area, with the fitting title: "Ein neuer Schweizer Exportartikel: Graphiker", but also to the genealogical article on page 15 on the Swiss ancestry of the astronaut Walter M. Schirra and of President …

Eighteenth Century Migration Of Swiss Mennonites To America, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

You all know Professor Schelbert's unique familiarity with Swiss emigration history from his earlier publications and lectures. Here he treats a subject of particular interest to us, i.e. the history of a significant group of immigrants from Switzerland driven out of their home country by religious motivations to a new continent in which they were allowed to live according to their religious convictions and where , by their genuinely honest way of life, they have made a lasting contribution to the development of that idealistic touch in the American character upon which much of our hope for a more peaceful …

This article was first published in German in the "Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte", Band 18, Heft 1, 1968. As a subscriber to this review I immediately inquired, after having read the article, about the possibility to get reprints for our members, but it was already too late. Dr. Kieser, however, kindly made an English version of his article for the benefit of our readers. We thank Dr. Kieser for this fine contribution to our Newsletter. For the many scholarly notes to this article we refer to the German original in the Schwei zerische Zeitschrift fur Geschichte which, on this occasion …

Book Review: Man And His Images. A Way Of Seeing, Lukas F. Burckhardt

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This beautifully illustrated book is the product of an unusual cooperation between an art writer and teacher and a company president who, together with his wife, is deeply concerned with living art and artists. W11oever approaches the seat of Geigy Chemical Corpor ation near the village of Ardsley, New York, is struck by a bold metal sculpture, the work of the Swiss artist Bernhard Luginbuhl. Entering the office of the President of Geigy, the visitor finds himself in the middle of modern works of art. The same is true for other offices. These paintings and sculptures have one thing in …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

To the Members and Friends of the SAHS ,

1 ) This issue of our Newsletter is entirely dedicated to the autobiography of one of our members , the civil-engineer Alphonse Kubly from Netstal in the canton of Glarus whose home is now in New York. It is a fascinating document, full of thoughtful observations on his youth in a typical Glarner milieu, where he grew up under the high moral standards of a family prominent in the tratidional textile industry, on his adolescence in the chaotic period of the twenties in Switzerland and in Germany, and on his new …

Before the advent of Mr. Collier, Everglades had been a sport-fisherman's outpost. There was an inn, the Rod & Gun Club, catering to yacht-borne fishing enthusiasts, and three or four small bungalows harbored families who made their modest living as guides. Now Everglades was going to be reshaped in a manner to do honor to its role as Country seat. There were many reminders of Mrs. Collier's favorite field of action: New York City. Approaching by boat, a street sign with the incongruous legend "Riverside Drive" had come into view. There also was the unavoidable Broadway. Along the boat pier …

Pages From The History Of The New York Swiss, Dr. Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In the course of my work on U.S.-Swiss relations I often comes across the name of New York and the activities of the Swiss living in that city or its neighborhood. New York was the place where the earliest permanent official contact was established between the two countries when a consulate was opened under Henri Casimer de Rham of Ynerdon in the summer of 1822. New York was the first consular district in the U.S. to become a permanent consulate general in 1933. New York was the place that received first the majority of Swiss immigrants to the United States …
