Standard Time Had A Rough Time In Bangor, Arnold A. Lasker

The article discusses how, in 1883, the growing interstate railroad system decided the standardize time in locations throughout the United States. The City of Bangor Maine protested the change from the local time system in use prior to this time.

This article recounts the experience of Samuel Spring Garner, of Maine, who moved to Alabama after the Civil War to assist in the Reconstruction effort. Emphasis is placed on Mr. Garner as an example of a “carpetbagger” who did not conform to the general stereotype of those individuals.
