Catalonia, the autonomous region of Spain has seen an increase in secessionist sentiments in recent years. While the past inclination toward independence has been centered on economic autonomy and cultural identity, there has been a recent emphasis on political independence, particularly in the times of crisis. Public Sentiment Toward Migration In A Globalizing World: The Case Of Spain And Its Distinctive Demeanor Toward Its Immigrants, Caroline Thompson

This thesis discusses Spain's overall public opinion around immigration, exploring factors that contribute to the development of a country's attitude toward its immigrants. Spain exemplifies a particularly distinctive attitude in relation to its European Mediterranean counterparts, displaying an increased receptiveness toward its immigrant population. I examine economic factors, studying whether or not perceived economic competition can lead to significantly increased negativity toward immigrants. However, I find that, specifically regarding the Spanish case, economic competition does not determine the country's attitude toward immigration. Therefore, I focus on this element of authoritarian legacy and its contribution to public opinion around immigration. Following …

This thesis examines two films for their critique on the damaging effects of nationalism on both the native and foreign populations in rural Spain and urban Catalonia. The two films are Flores de otro mundo (Flowers from another world) (1999), directed by Spanish director Iciar Bollain, and Forasters (Outsiders) (2008), a film by Catalan director Ventura Pons, based on Sergi Belbel's play. The theoretical framework for this study is based on Michael Billig's terms: "hot" and "banal" nationalism. From 1936 until 1975, Spain was under the control of Francisco Franco. Throughout these 39 years, Spain transformed into a structured, conservative country dominated by church and societal expectations. Women lost the majority of the rights gained under the Second Republic. The role of women during the dictatorship was to be the prefect mother and wife. They were to be pure, caring and obedient, with no voice to defend their beliefs. After Franco’s death and the establishment of the democracy, the role of women began to change. This thesis explores the different interpretations of the Malinche related to her role as the translator and lover of the Spaniards during the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the sixteenth century. Centuries later, during the period of Mexican independence in the nineteenth century, Malinche became the traditional symbol of the nation as the mother who betrays, sells and abandons Mexican independence from Spain when Mexicans tried eradicate Spanish influence in your country.
