Lila Harakles: Aspiring Public Servant Trains In Maine, Washington, D.C., Marcus Wolf

From studying in North Stevens Hall to interning on Capitol Hill, Lila Harakles' academic journey taught her what it means to be a public servant.

The University of Maine junior from Kennebunk translated her classroom instruction to the field in January 2020 when she began her UMaine Congressional Internship with U.S. Sen. Susan Collins. For the following year, she aided the senator's staff in Washington, D.C., Bangor, Biddeford, and Portland.

Umaine Community Message About Passing Of Coach Red Gendron, Margaret Nagle

Red Gendron, University of Maine Men's Ice Hockey Coach, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly after experiencing a medical condition. He was 63 years old.

Glaciology, Geomorphology Giant Roger Hooke Passes Away At 82, Division Of Marketing And Communications

Roger Hooke, beloved University of Maine mentor and researcher and giant in the fields of glaciology and geomorphology, died March 10 [2021] at the age of 82.

Hooke joined the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and Climate Change Institute in 2000 as a research professor and adviser. One of Hooke's interests during his time at UMaine involved examining what glacial landforms in Maine revealed about the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

Injury Prevention Grand Challenge Seed Grant Awardees Announced, Jason Charland

The University of Maine System Rural Health and Well-being Grand Challenge Initiative's Injury Prevention Collaborative recently held a seed grant competition for UMS researchers. The program is coordinated by Marcella Sorg and Jamie Wren at the University of Maine Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center, with assistance from UMaine's Office of Research Development.

The UMS Injury Prevention Collaborative coordinates current system resources related to rural injury and violence prevention for better collaboration, more robust applications for external funding, greater opportunities for students, and greater impact on the safety and well-being of Mainers.

The lack of consistent access to fresh and nutrient-dense foods can compound unhealthy gut microbiomes over time, impacting long term health, according to Dr. Sue Ishaq, an Assistant Professor of Animal and Veterinary Science in the School of Food and Agriculture at the University of Maine.

Umaine Graduate School Records All-Time High Student Enrollment, University Of Maine Graduate School

For the first time in its history, the University of Maine graduate student enrollment has exceeded 2,400 students following a record-breaking year of admissions.

Scott Delcourt, Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies, noted that "spring enrollment is usually about 10% less than the previous fall's enrollment, so to set an all-time high graduate enrollment in the spring is a good sign for graduate enrollment in the fall 2021 semester."

Umaine Awarded $2.8 Million To Accelerate Wind Blade Development Through Additive Manufacturing, Meghan Collins

The University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center has been awarded $2.8 million from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to develop a rapid, low-cost additive manufacturing - 3D printing - solution for fabricating large, segmented wind blade molds. In addition, the UMaine Composites Center will collaborate on a $4 million award to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to apply robotic deposition of continuous reinforcing fibers in wind blades.

Nih T32 Grant Awarded For Gsbse, Christel Peters

The University of Maine has received a five-year, $1.07 million Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) from the National Institutes of Health. This funding is the first of its kind to be awarded in the state of Maine from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. According to the NIH, the T32 program supports broad and fundamental, early-stage research training for predoctoral participants in centers that have significant impact on the health-related research needs of the U.S.
