Umaine Receives Patent For Composite Laminates Bound With Cellulose Nanofibers, Ashley Forbes

General University of Maine Publications

The University of Maine has been issued a patent for a process to create strong composite laminates that are bound with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). This technology, called Cellubound™, is part of UMaine's widening patent portfolio of strong, environmentally friendly products bound with CNF.

The process developed by UMaine researchers involves soaking sheets of paper in a CNF slurry, then layering the soaked sheets together and using a heated press to remove the water and bond the layers. The resulting product, made entirely of paper and uniquely impregnated with CNF, is strong, stiff and board-like, with the potential to replace plastics …

An Indigenous Micro - To Meta-Narrative: Microbes And Social Equity With Dr. Nicole Redvers, University Of Maine Institute Of Medicine, The Ishaq Lab, University Of Maine

General University of Maine Publications

Indigenous Peoples have scientific narratives and traditions that span thousands of years rooted within concepts of relationship. The microbial microcosm itself is a lens of relationship that situates us as humans within our own communities and in the biome of the planet. How these relationships intersect and how we view them as an evolution of knowledge in theory and practice impacts how we view equity and its applications in the scientific process. This seminar will seek to bridge Indigenous knowledge traditions and scientific discourse with the intent of situating microbes and social equity within a larger relationship within research and …

Ishaq Links Gut Health To Social Equity, Advocates For Policy Discussion, University Of Maine Research

General University of Maine Publications

Gut microbial communities are found throughout the digestive tract of all humans, animals and insects. As a human host to these living microbes, our diets, lifestyles, and environmental factors recruit different microbes into our gut and retain them, or make circumstances hospitable. The lack of consistent access to fresh and nutrient-dense foods can compound unhealthy gut microbiomes over time, impacting long term health, according to Dr. Sue Ishaq, an Assistant Professor of Animal and Veterinary Science in the School of Food and Agriculture at the University of Maine.
