Indian And Spanish-Mexican Cultural Influence In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Juanita Elizondo Garza Aug 1984

Indian And Spanish-Mexican Cultural Influence In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Juanita Elizondo Garza

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The pre-Columbian cultures occupying the geographic complex known today as South Texas and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, lived a nomadic existence for thousands of years. Spaniards explored the area shortly after their arrival in America and attempted to colonize among the Indians. They were unsuccessful until the mid 1700s. By that time, Iberian culture had adapted to American conditions and had emerged in a Mexican form. Indian societies had been integrated into the new Spanish-Mexican culture. This society, more tolerant of indigenous populations, succeeded in establishing communities among Coahuiltecos, residents of South Texas and Tamaulipas. Spanish-Mexicans also modified established …

Professional Baseball In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of South Texas, 1949-1961, Mark Lynn Paschall

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Professional minor league baseball has been played in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of South Texas since 1910. Early leagues had trouble gaining a foothold in this region during the years prior to the Second World War primarily because all games were played in the intense heat of the South Texas summers.

With the installation of arc-lights at many of the local ball parks, following the post World War II era, to allow teams to play their games in the cooler hours of the evening, area entrepreneurs tried once again to bring the National Pastime to the Valley. Unable to …

The Mexicans' And Mexican-Americans' Contribution To The Development Of The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas And Its Citrus Industry, Camilo A. Martinez Jr.

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The little-discussed Mexican and Mexican-American contribution to the development of the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas into the great citrus producing area that it is today is exposed in general terms in this thesis. Due credit has been given to the Burgos, Tamaulipas, residents who came to the Valley during and after the Mexican Revolution in search of stability and better wages. In spite of the abuses they suffered, some of them decided to stay. Their children (now Mexican-Americans), are still contributing to the citrus industry today, although not in the strenuous way their parents did.

The Valley owes …

Background To Banditry In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas: 1900 To 1912, Rodolfo Rocha Dec 1974

Background To Banditry In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas: 1900 To 1912, Rodolfo Rocha

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The banditry in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas which began in 1912 and lasted until 1920 has been attributed to the Mexican Revolution, World War I, and prohibition. A fourth cause, the lawlessness that existed in the Valley prior to 1912, has been neglected by historians. The lawlessness was a result of the laxity and ineffective administration of law and order in the Valley. Criminal court records from Cameron, Hidalgo, and Starr Counties revealed that approximately 80 percent of all persons charged with cattle and horse theft, assault with intent to commit murder, or murder were exonerated. The …
