The purpose of this thesis is to give a comprehensive but not too detailed account of the history of cotton production in the Middle Brazos valley, in Texas. Very little printed source material could be found which dealt with this particular region. Most of the material, therefore, came from interviews with members of pioneer families whose ancestors were among the earliest settlers in this part of Texas.

One of the best sources for the study of the life of the last century is the daily newspaper. The decade of the 'nineties was outstanding and has been the subject of much derision and admiration. A study of the "Las Vegas Daily Optic" may be enlightening in revealing something of the life in one of New Mexico's largest and most aggressive towns. The "Optic" was the leading English daily of the community. "La Voz del Pueblo", its only rival, was printed in Spanish.

The purpose of this paper is to trace the background of the statehood movement in Arizona to the year 1902; to discuss the qualifications of Arizona for statehood as brought out in the arguments for and against the omnibus bill in the fifty-seventh congress; to give a critical analysis of the findings of the sub-committee of investigation in Arizona in 1902; and to determine why the United States Senate declined to admit Arizona as a state in the fifty-seventh Congress.

The Mogollon Mountain region is probably the least known of any section in New Mexico of similar extent and wealth. The region offers a ripe field for both the archaeologist and the student of modern history.

The region bears evidence, in its many prehistoric ruins, of having at one time supported a large sedentary population. As regards the early inhabitants of this area, E. W.
