This course introduces major philosophical schools in pre-modern India (7th cen. BCE – 8th cen. CE), including Sāṃkhya, Yoga, Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, Mīmāṃsā, Vedānta, Jainism, Buddhism, and Cārvāka. Special emphasis is placed on arguments about the nature of the self, its relationship to ultimate reality, and methods of overcoming the human predicament. Readings include original texts by Indian philosophers in English translation as well as contemporary discussions and developments of their views. In this way the continuing influence of these philosophies in the religions and cultures of South Asia and worldwide diaspora is highlighted. Gen Ed: Ethics, Cultural Diversity and International …

Planetarium Celebrates 70th Birthday In A Cosmic Way, Shawn Laatsch

In October of 1954, three years prior to Sputnik, the University of Maine opened the ninth university planetarium in the United States. It started as a facility for teaching astronomy to university students but rapidly expanded to serve the community offering K-12 school visits and public performances. As of the end of October 2024 we reached 1 million visitors in our 70-year history and inspired countless people to explore their universe in new ways. Our programs have expanded into numerous areas beyond astronomy, highlighting science, art, music, theater and culture. Learn more about our history inside this issue.

On Sunday, October 20, 2024 an incident occurred in Orono where two University of Maine students were allegedly assaulted by Noah Lachapelle-Quinn. Noah is not an Orono resident or University of Maine student, but he is known to frequent student gatherings in Orono. At this time an arrest warrant has been issued for Noah Lachapelle-Quinn for Aggravated Assault.
