In his 1984 assessment of the state of historical research, "The Transatlantic Economy," Jacob Price comments: "The writing of most early American economic history has concentrated upon supply. For many branches of the economy, the great unexplored frontier may well be demand." The relationship between Philadelphia and Havana is a case in point. The 19th century saw significant increases in the number of Chinese immigrants entering North America, most significantly on the west coast of the United States. Already facing increasing divide amongst the American population over the issue of the Opium Wars and the resulting Opium-addiction amongst the Chinese, the United States found itself now confronting the problem in the form of immigrant workers. Although the Opium Wars and the issue of the Chinese Opium Dens were highly disputed outside the courts, the State and Federal courts surprisingly avoided discussing the topic in their legislative discussions surrounding the Chinese Exclusion Act of …

Because Great Britain was the first nation to industrialize, the British workers have been a favorite topic among economic and social historians. Until now, however, there have been no textbooks covering all aspects of British labor history. E. H. Hunt has admirably filled this gap. His book deals with practically every topic of interest concerning British workers from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the beginning of World War I.

An analysis of the pamphlet Guatemala Por Fernando VII about Guatemala City's response to Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Spain in 1808 and eventual support for Fernando VII, the heir to the Spanish throne who abdicated at the start of the conflict. The essay considers the meaning of several images presented as part of Guatemala City's celebration of Fernando VII in December 2012 which were included in the publication.

The law of the South American states with reference to nationality of origin remains to be noticed. Sir Alexander Cockburn, Nationality: or, The law relating to subjects and aliens, considered with a view to future legislation (London, W. Ridgway, 1869), 17. In December 1841, voters in Sonsonate (El Salvador) elected Frenchman and long-time resident, Luis Bertrand Save, as their alcalde, or municipal judge, for 1842. The governor insisted that Save accept the office. Strategies Of Representation, Relationship, And Resistance: British Women Travelers And Mormon Plural Wives, C. 1870-1890, Karen M. Morin, J.K. Guelke

During the 1870s and 1880s, several British women writers traveled by transcontinental railroad across the American West via Salt Lake City, Utah, the capital of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormons. These women subsequently wrote books about their travels for a home audience with a taste for adventures in the American West, and particularly for accounts of Mormon plural marriage, which was sanctioned by the Church before 1890. "The plight of the Mormon woman," a prominent social reform and literary theme of the period, situated Mormon women at the center of popular representations of Utah during …
