Beyond Women’s Words unites feminist scholars, artists, and community activists working with the stories of women and other historically marginalized subjects to address the contributions and challenges of doing feminist oral history.

Feminists who work with oral history methods want to tell stories that matter. High on the east bank of the River Foyle, literally at ‘the Top of the Hill’ at the highest elevation in the city limits of Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, a temple stood briefly. At 72 feet high, it towered over its surroundings, a thin spire mirroring the city’s cathedral steeples on the river’s opposite bank. The sign at its entrance instructed ‘Leave a memory behind, let go of the past and look to the future.’ Memories relinquished would not remain – at least not in their material forms. ‘Temple’ was made to be ephemeral, built to be consumed in flames on …

In addition to the traditional demands of the discipline—critical thinking, analytical acumen, the ability to locate and make sense of evidence, storytelling talent—we have been gradually adding items to our job descriptions. Emerging historians are expected to be able to build a website, develop an app, raise money, engage with various publics, make a map, court the press, and manage and curate multiauthoredhistory projects, often simultaneously.

Spatializing Politics is an anthology of emerging scholarship that treats built and imagined spaces as critical to knowing political power. In academic and popular discourse, spaces tend to serve as passive containers, symbols, or geographical coordinates for political theories, ideologies, and histories. By contrast, the essays in this collection illustrate how buildings and landscapes as disparate as Rust Belt railway stations and rural Rwandan hills become tools of political action and frameworks for political authority. Rethinking The Historiography Of Civil Rights In Derry: Memory As Resistance In Northern Ireland 1922-1969, Margo Shea

Understanding the civil rights movement and the passions it aroused as an extension of Catholic community life in Derry city, instead of a break from it, suggests that the events of the late 1960s have a long and diverse historic lineage.  The motivation to call for political, social and economic change stemmed from something more than frustration, a newfound sense of entitlement, inspiration gleaned from television sets broadcasting global civil rights’ struggles or the agitation of young bucks of the baby boomer generation keen on upending the status quo.

This article explores the challenges and opportunities that accompany efforts on the ground to nurture innovation as we promote stewardship, preserve valued places, advance education, and facilitate citizens’ connection to their parks and historic sites in the second century of the National Park Service. Using the first nationally designated historic site, Salem Maritime, as a case study, we examine efforts to grapple with bureaucratic inertias, entrenched patterns of insularity, and reliance on top-down authority. “Building Citizens” is a collaboration of the Walt Whitman Center for the Culture and Politics of Democracy and the Walter and Elise Haas Fund. This project is rooted in our belief at the Whitman Center that democracy is as much a way of life as a form of government, and that it must be served jointly by thought and action, by deliberation and commitment. “Building Citizens” was written to help community service programs to incorporate a deliberative, civic dimension into their programs.
