The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …

El Olvido Está Lleno De Memoria: El Proceso De Recuperación De La Memoria Histórica De La Dictadura De Pinochet, Sarah Arvey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The theoretical and methodological advances in memory studies have contributed to a recuperation of cultural history. Although it is important to recognize that the revival of historical memory contributes to the conscientious of the continuum of the past into the present, it is essential also to restore the forgotten voices and persons of particular historical situations. In Chile, the pains of recent history, including the 17 years of dictatorial violence and violations of human rights under Augusto Pinochet, 1973 – 1990, and the transition to democracy that is still going today, are essential to the understanding of current Chilean culture …

Throne Names, Pen Names, Horse Names, And Field Names: A Look At The Significance Of Name Change In The Ethiopian Political Sphere, Krista Mehari

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study examines the motivations for name changes and the purposes the chosen names accomplish, specifically relating to the Ethiopian political sphere. Throne names and horse names were used solely by the emperors and the ruling class. Those name changes exalted the bearer by either stating his authority or connecting him to divine power. Pen names and field names were used by people not in power to hide their identity from people with the power to harm them. Although the purpose of those name changes was to disguise, the names that were chosen identified the bearer with another person or …

“Tout Travail Doit Nourrir Son Homme” The Dakar-Niger Railroad And The 1947-1948 Strike In The Political And Labor History Of Senegal, Julia Coyner Robinson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project examines the history of the Dakar-Niger railroad from its birth to its decline to illuminate the nature of the rail strike of 1947-1948 in French West Africa. The strike would prove to be a landmark in the continuous resistance of colonized peoples against the colonial state. The railroad was and is a physical as well as an invisible presence in the economic, political, and social history, and the connections that would form around this history of resistance and of colonialism from its earliest days would come to define not only the strike but the history of Senegal and …

There was a time, long ago, when a small lake or reservoir had formed in a remote area whose location still remains a mystery today. One day, a king was passing through this region. He desperately needed water and searched and searched, but to no avail. Finally, he found this lake and was able to quench his thirst, and thus prevented himself from dying of dehydration (Avimary).

This story is one of many that are present within the canon of oral literature in Madagascar today. It originated from a small town called Ampanihy, which lies in the southwestern region of …
