In today's post-Civil Rights era, I believe that America has lost sight of what patriotism is and where it belongs. Patriotism, as it is understood today, has become mistakenly merged with nationalism. In the minds of the public and media, patriots are supposed to exhibit undying loyalty and dedication to their country. This sentiment is better aligned with nationalism, a concept that I would argue should ideally be distinct from patriotism. In this paper, I looked at two varieties of nationalism in nineteenth-twentieth century Ireland (parliamentary and revolutionary nationalism) and compared them to each other and to unionism. Specifically, I looked at how they were similar in their concern for religious equality, appeals to pride and love of country, desire for increased political rights, and the need to be unified.

Language makes a people. Or, at least, for centuries that has been seen as the case. European nationalists have consciously employed language as a tool and a means for creating a national identity for centuries. They believed that within a nation a common religion or common customs did not matter so much in defining them as a people as having a common language. World War II brought about a realignment of the power structure among the nations of the world. The primary conflict of interest developed between Russian and the Western nations, with the United States predominant among them.
Through the leverage afforded by the East-West conflict, African nations were able to exert enough force to dislodge the colonial powers which had ruled them for nearly a century.
Early efforts to unite the African people were carried out in the United States and other Western nations, with American Negroes leading the drive. Among these men were W.E.B. DuBois and Marcus Garvey.
