City as Classroom Projects

This course will examine the political, socio-economic, and cultural history of modern Britain. Using a variety of primary and secondary texts, we will consider the development of parliamentary government, democracy, the modern state, empire, capitalism, and urban-industrial society as well as the cultural changes accompanying and informing these transformations, from the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the late twentieth century. British modernity was indeed precocious, and we will seek to understand the context, causes, and consequences of that experience.

This course is an introduction to the major themes of twentieth century Russian and Soviet history for History majors. The events examined include the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, the Russian Civil War, the changes introduced under the New Economic Policy, industrialization and collectivization, the Great Terror, World War II, de-Stalinization, the Gorbachev reforms, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Attention is paid to the ethnic diversity of the Russian empire and Soviet Union.

This course will explore some portions of the development of global history from about a million years before the present to the voyages of Columbus. We will analyze different aspects of history including the more standard histories of governing and political ideologies, empires and states, and warfare and diplomacy. We will examine humans in motion, stories of migration, sea-faring, evangelizing, trade, and the cross-cultural encounters those all engendered. This introductory survey course covers United States history through the lives of representative Americans. A series of biographies of major figures who confronted the pivotal issues and challenges of their times structure the course. Themes include colonial life, the emergence of American national identity, the founding and preservation of the republic, the struggle against slavery and racism, the spread of capitalism and industrialization, the rise of foreign affairs, the influence of immigration, the growth of the federal welfare state, and the creation of an inclusive society.
