The People Of The Cumberland Plateau: Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow
The People Of The Cumberland Plateau: Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow
Symposium of Student Scholars
The area of East Tennessee that lies between the Appalachian and Cumberland Mountains is called the Cumberland Plateau. This area reaches from Chattanooga to Bristol. Many people not from this region label it as redneck, back-woods, or hillbilly. Many don’t consider it to be a place that holds modern values, such as conservation and education. Through archival research, I will study this area during the Great Depression to explore how this place’s reality is different.
During one generation, the Plateau changed from a place defined by isolation and limited education to a hub of scientific research and a major provider …

U. S. - Moroccan Relations In The Context Of The Anfa Conference, Karim Bejjit
U. S. - Moroccan Relations In The Context Of The Anfa Conference, Karim Bejjit
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This essay seeks to shed new light on the intricate course of U.S.-Moroccan relations following the landing of American troops on the Atlantic coasts of Morocco. The Anfa Conference and Sultan Mohamed V’s dinner meeting with President Roosevelt marked an important stage in the process of Moroccan struggle for independence. Roosevelt’s personal interest in the Moroccan situation may have accentuated the inconsistencies in U.S. foreign policy in the 1940s regarding the French colonial empire and confronted its fundamental idealism with the exigencies of pragmatic politics. The vicissitudes of the war and America’s deep commitment to its French ally as well …
Between The Circle And The Line: Ibn Khaldun’S View Of History And Change, Allen James Fromherz
Between The Circle And The Line: Ibn Khaldun’S View Of History And Change, Allen James Fromherz
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
Historians from many different eras and contexts have viewed history and historical change as either linear or circular in nature. Giambattista Vico (d. 1744 CE), the Italian philosopher and historian, organized history in a cyclical way as different nations and peoples rise and fall. At the same time, according to Vico (2000), humanity was destined towards equity. Sima Qian of China (d. 86 BCE) viewed the past as a series of circular attempts to restore the Mandate of Heaven and consolidate central power, attempts that were then followed by breakdowns into feudal states (Qian, 1995). For Qian, history seemed to …
Transgender Digital Embodiments: Questions Of The Transgender Body In The 21st Century, Jessica Fisher
Transgender Digital Embodiments: Questions Of The Transgender Body In The 21st Century, Jessica Fisher
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This thesis looks at an intra-community discourse in the transgender community between “transtrenders” and “transmedicalists” or “truscum.” It observes how these different sub-communities conceive of what it means to be transgender and attempts to contextualize these conceptions within transgender history. This thesis utilizes a brief ethnography of online spaces where transgender community discourse could be found, including Reddit, Twitter, and Tumblr. It discusses the idea of “transtrenders” as cultural appropriators, looks at the role of passing, and wanting to and trying to pass, in the transgender community and in conceptions of who is truly transgender and who isn’t. This thesis …
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
The history of taxonomy is not usually taught in modern biology classes, but it is necessary to understand the history of classification and science as a whole in order to better understand the processes of classification and thinking that are commonly taught at the college level. Through the exploration of the difficulties of publishing, Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, and three pre-Linnaean works from Pliny the Elder, Nehemiah Grew, and Rembert Dodoens, I have found that the history of the sciences has been largely distorted. The distortion appears to be of many factors, including the replacement of ideas, censorship from scholarly …
