Student success is central to UMaine’s mission, values, reputation and fiscal health. The first year of a student’s academic experience has a particularly significant impact on their academic success or failure. A variety of factors contribute to students’ success (or failure) in their first year. In 2018-2019, the Divisions of Academic Affairs and Student Life are collaborating on the development of a plan to optimize the first-year student experience. The goal is to help students form a solid foundation for initial and continued success.

Student success is central to UMaine's mission, values, reputation and fiscal health. Improving first-year student success is a major focus for Academic Affairs and Student Affairs in 2018- 2019. On September 27, the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost launched the public phase of this initiative. The goal: to develop an integrated plan of actions that will result in improved first year student success as defined by first year retention.

Charge to Academic Support Services: Develop a set of recommendations about ways that our student academic support services can better serve first year students.

The Engaged Black Bear (EBB) is an innovative digital badging initiative, created to aid the University of Maine in meeting its vision to become the "most distinctively student-centered and community engaged of all the American Research Universities." EBB Learning Pathway Digital Badges were created to engage undergraduate students at three levels - taking them from a participant to leader within a chosen area of interest. Pathways include important societal issues such as: Global Perspectives, Service to Community and Environmental Stewardship. A new report indicating that more college freshmen than ever believe education is something to be endured rather than enjoyed comes as no surprise to Russell Quaglia, director of the National Center for Student Aspirations at the University of Maine. The recently released report from the Los Angeles-based Higher Education Research Institute is on target with the Aspirations Center's surveys of Maine high school students who say that school is neither energizing nor challenging.

The number of students leaving four-year colleges before their sophomore year has reached a national record of 27 percent despite new programs and strategies aimed at improving student services and advising and easing the transition from high school to higher education. The troublesome retention rate sends a clear message about the role of professors in student success, says the director of the National Center for Student Aspirations at the University of Maine.
