Souls, Cars, And Division: The Amish Mission Movement Of The 1950s And Its Effects On The Amish Community Of Partridge, Kansas, Peter D. Miller

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Though often perceived as static, Amish identity is subject to change. The mid-twentieth century was a period of notable change. The recent experience of World War II, American religious revival movements, and economic pressures all placed pressure upon Amish communities to adapt. This paper highlights the experience of the Amish community of Partridge, Kansas, where these pressures and widespread interest in mission work eventually led to a church division in the 1950s. This paper explores the contributing factors to that split and examines the reactions on both sides to the division.

Radicals In The Revolution: The Persecution Of Christians During The Revolutionary War, Kevan D. Keane

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

This paper explores the plight of radical Christians in Pennsylvania during the American Revolution. The Amish Farm In Transition: The Amish Response To Modernization In Northern Indiana, 1900-1920, Amy Grover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the responses of Amish agrarians in northern Indiana to the mechanization and modernization of rural life in the early twentieth century. This period was marked by a shift towards agribusiness as well as the increased usage of farm machines. In addition to the increased emphasis on farm efficiency, reformers sought to modernize or update rural life. Within the context of these transformations, the Amish maintained their identity by exploring the necessity and the consequences of adapting to life in the modern world. Their responses to modernization defined not only their cultural boundaries in the modern world but …
