A study of Villas on the Hudson: A Collection of Photo-Lithographs of Thirty-One Country Residences (D. Appleton & Co., 1860) depicts floor plans and views of stately homes of 19th century country gentlemen that were located in today's upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester County, Dutchess County, and even Hoboken, NJ. When published, architecture was in its infancy as a profession and we see representative works of A.J. Davis, J.C Wells, T.R. Jackson and D. Lienau, and others. Discusses the construction of and military training provided at the boot camp for the Women's Reserve, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), established in 1943 on Hunter College's Bronx campus. By the time it closed in 1946, 85,885 WAVES, 1,914 SPARS (the Women's Coast Guard Reserve), and 3,339 Marines had enrolled.

Understood as a search for "the abstract principles embodied in music and the sounds of which it consists," music theory casts a wide net: it calls for a comparative sample and insists on a systematic methodology. As " the scholarly study of music, wherever it is found historically or geographically," musicology casts an even wider net. In practice, however, it has not been possible to transcend historical and geographical boundaries.
