Our Veterans’ Voices series continues with Air Force veterans Matt Bauer of Vandalia and Jeff McCannon of Columbus. Matt and Jeff are battle buddies. They’ve been deployed three times and it’s their shared experiences and memories – both good and bad - while on those multiple tours of service that bonds them today.

Wolfgang H. W. Grossman enlisted in the United States Army in 1969. He served at Fort Campbell, Fort Gordon, Fort Dix, Fort Bragg, and in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, and more. He attained the rank of Specialist (E-5) and was discharged in 1978.

For some who serve in the military, their work is top secret, and the contribution they make to national security may never be publicly known. The WYSO Veterans' Voices series tells the story of Army veteran John Harshman who, unbeknownst to him, helped crack the code of the German Enigma machines. Those machines were used to encrypt secret messages during World War II.

Jim "Pee Wee" Martin, an World War II Army Veteran, parachuted into Normandy on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at the age of 93. Jim was in the now famous 506th parachute infantry regiment featured in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. He was nicknamed “Pee Wee” because he was the lightest man in the unit. At the end of the war, Jim returned to Xenia to build a house, raise a family, and live a modest life. But when Jim got online and connected with social media, his popularity reached celebrity status.

On February 11, 2003 Brett Stolle interviewed James Fuller, a former mechanic and police detective, for a class project dealing with oral histories and capturing the history of the Miami Valley. During the interview James discusses his childhood in Kentucky, enlisting in the army during World War II, and the variety of jobs he held in Dayton after returning from the War.

In this first interview with Dr. William D. Sawyer, Dean of the Wright State University School of Medicine, Dean Sawyer discusses his background prior to coming to Wright State University. In particular, Dr. Sawyer's medical education; his internship and residency; his military service and service at Johns Hopkins University are examined.

In further discussions, Dean Sawyer turns to his experiences in Thailand as a member of the Rockefeller Foundation developing the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Bangkok University. Dean Sawyer discusses the development process and its impact on his own leadership style.

In this first of three interviews, Dr. A.V. Black, former Chairman of the Montgomery County Medical Society and former faculty member of the Community Medicine Department of the Wright State University School of Medicine, discusses his early background and experiences as a physician in the Miami Valley area. He describes his wartime activities and his involvement in the Montgomery County Medical Society.

Dr. Black then discusses briefly the initial reaction of the Medical Society to the invitation of study of the feasibility of establishment of a School of Medicine in Dayton.
