In her November 13, 1976 interview with Sara L. "Sally" Tyler, Janie May Carroll Rice expresses her love of Winthrop. Rice recalls President Johnson’s involvement with the students, and his desire to include religion in all aspects of campus life. Rice also defends the many rules and regulations of Winthrop. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the Louise Pettus Archives and Special Collections Oral History Program.

In her November 9, 1976 interview with Sally Tyler, Julia Mobley Irwin details her life as a day student in the early 1900s. Irwin recalls her favorite classes, describes uniforms, insists that there was never a swimming pool at Winthrop, and relates the traditions of graduation week. Irwin also shares Benjamin Tillman's message to students at her 1904 graduation ceremony. Correspondents include Ernest Hollings, Donald Russell, John P. Saylor, W.S. Stuckey, Jr., Roy A. Taylor, Mark W. Clark, Wayne Aspinall, and Stewart Udall.

The Sara Vandiver Liverance Papers include correspondence, memoranda, minutes, program notes, newspaper clippings, legislative bills and publications, concerning Mrs. Liverance’s efforts as legislative chairwoman to the S.C. Council for the Common Good, to get jury service for women in S.C., and in trying to improve nursing care in the state. While the collection extends from 1954 to 1981, most of the material is for the period from 1966 to 1973.

Marguerite Tolbert was a Winthrop alumna (Class of 1914), club woman, educator, Winthrop Board of Trustee member, and administrator with the Opportunity School in Columbia, South Carolina. The Marguerite Tolbert Papers consist of biographical data, newspaper and magazine articles, photographs, a copy of her thesis titled, A Survey of Negro Elementary Schools of Oconee County (1940), a scrapbook, and other papers, mainly relating to her career as an educator and to her student days at Winthrop (1911-1914).
