Maine Folklife, Vol. 15, Iss. 2, Maine Folklife Center

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter

In April, 2010 we launched our Drive Dull Care Away campaign to raise the Sandy Ives Endowment fund to $1 million. Folklorist Nick Spitzer, who produces and hosts American Routes on NPR agreed to be our honorary chair of the campaign and came to Maine to speak at the University in support of the Maine Folklife Center and preserving the legacy of its founder, Edward D. Some day in the not-too-distant future, the Maine Folklife Center will have a self-supporting endowment. As a result, staff will continue to produce local cultural events, conduct folklife research, and care for the archives, without worrying about the Center's financial future. To make this dream a reality, the Folklife Center recently launched the Sandy Ives Endowment Campaign, through which the Center hopes to increase its endowment by $1 million. Income generated from the campaign will help support the Center's ongoing mission in light of recent unusual budget cuts at the University of Maine.

General University of Maine Publications

Anthropology is the study of humans. Anthropologists study the entire spectrum of human existence from 6.5 million years ago when the first hominid set foot on the African continent, the process of human evolution, domestication of plants and animals, development of civilization, migration to the ends of the earth, and the present day diversity of cultures, religions, economies, and kinship systems seen around the world. Anthropology provides a well-rounded, generalist education that enhances wide career choices and provides students with the ability to critically evaluate theories, options, and actions that affect humankind.

Divided Ownership, Wild Speculation: An Investigation Of The Connections Between Thomas Hutchinson And Land Speculation In Eighteenth Century Maine, Cory Michael Davis

Honors College

This paper will highlight the clashes between the Kennebeck Proprietors and Thomas Hutchinson, the last Royal Governor of Massachusetts. The Kennebeck Proprietors were a company of influential Boston merchants who saw the Kennebec River valley as a lucrative opportunity on the Maine frontier. As the Proprietors expanded their claims Thomas Hutchinson often interceded to block their aspirations. These land disputes highlight the ambitions of the Proprietors and the actions Hutchinson took to block them. It would be these clashes that would motivate the Proprietors to have a direct interest in the events of August 1765.

The August 1765 attack on …
