Reforming Christianity By Reforming Christians: Devotional Writings Of The Late Medieval And Reformation Era, Christopher J. Quail
Reforming Christianity By Reforming Christians: Devotional Writings Of The Late Medieval And Reformation Era, Christopher J. Quail
History Theses
During the late medieval and Reformation era in Europe, a series of Christian devotional works were created that stressed a deeper personal relationship with Christ, rather than ritual and public devotion alone. These works span the time period from the early fifteenth century through the early seventeenth century and prepared the way for and shaped the Protestant and Roman Catholic reformations alike. The devotional works addressed here were created in the quest for reform, of both the individual and the Church. This occurred as the importance of developing a better relationship with Jesus was taking on a new urgency for …

Bermuda’S Museum Treasures: An Application Of Collections Accessibility, Britt R. Franklin
Museum Studies Theses
Over the past twenty years, led by large cultural institutions, there has been an evolutionary shift in the way that museums connect with visitors and make their artifacts and archives accessible. As cultural institutions face greater demands from audiences, museums are adapting and embracing technological components now fundamental to growth and success. The National Museum of Bermuda is a small institution that is in a transformative stage. This paper focuses on how the National Museum of Bermuda have integrated advanced exhibit design and components in addition to how they are implementing networking tools to invite audiences to take a deeper …

Russell
Museum Studies Theses
ABSTRACT OF THESIS
City2 Buffalo:
a smartphone app designed to establish a mobile museum without walls, exhibiting the living city of Buffalo, NY and its rich history and environment, with a purpose to inform and inspire all toward global cultural awareness and civic engagement, in order to collectively create a better future.
The present environment, including the technological capabilities inspired by the Information Revolution, requires American museums to reconsider their traditional practices. American history museums are specially challenged to address future possibilities and difficulties resulting from social, economic and demographic change. This paper proposes a new type of history …

Urban Undertaking: Changes In The Land And The Decline Of Spatial Quality In Buffalo, Ny, 1951-2011, Timothy Tielman
Urban Undertaking: Changes In The Land And The Decline Of Spatial Quality In Buffalo, Ny, 1951-2011, Timothy Tielman
History Theses
The City of Buffalo in 1880 was a densely developed city of 180,000 people. Its success was built upon reducing the friction of space between it (and its Great lakes hinterland) and the Atlantic seaboard, first with the Erie Canal, then with railroads. Within the city, people walked or used carriages or streetcars pulled by horses on iron rails. Freight was moved mostly with horse and wagon. These were centripetal forces, concentrating people and economic activity in an ever-denser core as the city grew. Changes to this landscape began to be seen in fundamental ways in the early 1950s, and …

Working Methods: The Howard D. Beach Photography Studio Of Gelatin Dry Plate Negatives, Noelle Wiedemer
Museum Studies Theses
In the spring of 2011, the Buffalo History Museum (BHM) received a donation of over 57,000 gelatin dry plate glass negatives from the Howard D. Beach Photography Studio located in Buffalo, New York and in operation in various manifestations from 1896 to 1954. Beach was a prominent portrait photographer of notable Buffalonians, including Darwin D. Martin, Ansley Wilcox, Katherine Cornell, Margaret Wendt, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
This paper serves to explore the results of the pilot study of various physical and chemical properties of the gelatin dry plate negatives in order to understand Beach’s photographic working methods and compare them …
A Form In The Road: U.S. Foreign Policy And The Path Toward Globalization In The Middle East, 1945-2014, Joshua P. Brotka
A Form In The Road: U.S. Foreign Policy And The Path Toward Globalization In The Middle East, 1945-2014, Joshua P. Brotka
History Theses
This thesis examines the history of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East since 1945. From the start of the Cold War immediately following the conclusion of WWII and up to the present day (2014), U.S. policy has been subject to many revisions and simultaneously, upheld national security measures. As the world heads toward an era where globalization is most prevalent, the United States will have to make drastic decisions regarding its foreign policy in the Middle East. Its alliance with Israel, oil interests, Islamic fundamentalism, an evolving Muslim society, and supporting a national security agenda has forced the United …
The Power Of Corrupt Political Environments And Its Effects On Museums: A Look At Egypt’S Modern-Day ‘Indiana Jones’: Dr. Zahi Hawass, Christine Smith
The Power Of Corrupt Political Environments And Its Effects On Museums: A Look At Egypt’S Modern-Day ‘Indiana Jones’: Dr. Zahi Hawass, Christine Smith
History Theses
Egypt has been a nation plagued with political corruption since the early years of colonialism. After being under French and then British domination throughout the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, the 1952 Revolution under Egypt’s Free Officers gave, Egypt a rare opportunity for independent political and cultural growth. Although change occurred politically―as seen in the Suez Crisis―Egypt’s antiquities remained stagnant and still under the influence of foreigners. Egypt’s antiquities were directly supervised by the British and the French until that time, but remained influenced even after the political revolution. There were few Egyptians involved in preservation …
Revolution, Rebellion And Subversion In Us History: Government And Public Response, Christie F. Andrle
Revolution, Rebellion And Subversion In Us History: Government And Public Response, Christie F. Andrle
History Theses
The main objective of this thesis is to identify and examine the trends throughout American history regarding how the government has responded to internal conflicts. From the Revolution to the post-9/11 years, the United States government has dealt with numerous instances of tension and conflict with its citizens, often resulting in restrictive legislation or other measures suppressing liberty.
The primary methods used in exploring this subject include comparison and evaluation of the public and government responses to such conflicts. Previous historical analysis of events and laws, public commentary, and firsthand accounts of individual experiences are drawn upon to illustrate the …
