Examines reforms in the Ottoman Empire during the Tanzimat, 1839-1876, when the traditional system of government and politics was modified to reflect the challenges facing the Ottoman Empire from the expanding power and presence of European nations who were rapidly emerging as the most powerful nations in the world. Evaluates the different ideologies which emerged during the Tanzimat in terms of their content, which reflects a spectrum of influences ranging from the traditional Islamic framework of government and politics to that of 19th century Western assumptions and practices of government and politics.
