A four-panel comic strip drawn by Travis Dandro depicting a bigoted perspective of both people of color and individuals with disabilities.

Long description.

Panel one contains one figure, a highly stylized, anthropomorphized Gnu (or African antelope with along head and beard), presumably the title character of the strip, Mr. Gnu. The character is holding a cereal box in front of him. Lettering over the character's head reads: "Hey kids! I'd like to introduce a new cereal!"

Panel two contains a close up of the cereal box with the lettering, "Sammy Davis CRUNCH" over a stylized drawing of a character that …

Women, Technology, And Rural Life: Some Recent Literature, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg Oct 1997

Women, Technology, And Rural Life: Some Recent Literature, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

Historical study of American farm women has had a relatively short life, reaching back approximately twenty years. Rural women rarely existed in earlier scholarship that reserved the categories of farmer and farming for males. Agricultural history thus manifested itself as a story of men and their tools, stretching back historiographically into the early days of the 20th century. Although in 1953 Jared van Wagenen described in careful detail many of the physical processes of farming in The Golden Age of Homespun, the women's work from which he derived his title occupied less than twenty pages at the end of his …

The Disposable Mexican: Operation Wetback 1954, The Deportation Of Undocumented Workers In California And Texas, Sylvia Cavazos

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

In June 1954 the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service initiated an aggressive program to rid the country of Mexican undocumented workers. The campaign was a result of years of hostile media coverage and public outcry that depicted Mexicans as subversive villains infiltrating the country in order to rob "decent, hardworking Americans" of jobs. In an attempt to satisfy these critics, the federal government called for the immediate deportation of over one million Mexicans, the majority of whom had been actively recruited by American growers. The INS called this program Operation Wetback.

Religious Institutions And Black Political Activism, Frederick C. Harris Jun 1997

Religious Institutions And Black Political Activism, Frederick C. Harris

Trotter Review

During the modern Civil Rights Movement religious institutions provided critical organizational resources for protest mobilization. As Aldon Morris' extensive study of the southern Civil Rights Movement noted, the Black Church served as the "organizational hub of Black life," providing the resources that fostered—along with other indigenous groups and institutions—collective protest against a system of white domination in the South.

The Church And Negro Progress, George E. Haynes Jun 1997

The Church And Negro Progress, George E. Haynes

Trotter Review

The marked progress of the Negro in America in which the church has been a factor has been of three general types. The first is intra-group advancement in such phases of life as education and wealth. The second is inter-group adjustments between the Negro population and the white population in such matters as economic relationships, citizenship rights and privileges, interracial contacts and fellowship. There is a third type of progress which touches both the internal and external life of the Negro group such as the cultural contributions of Negroes which have gradually been incorporated into our common life. There are, …

African-American Churches: Women Feeling The Spirit Take Some By Surprise, Kathryn Ritchie Apr 1997

African-American Churches: Women Feeling The Spirit Take Some By Surprise, Kathryn Ritchie

Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

When Cheryl Townsend Gilkes was a little girl, she leaned over to her mother in their normally sedate, traditional New England church one day to ask why Mrs. Sinclair was shouting. "She feels the Spirit," her mother explained in a whisper. Gilkes marveled at the older woman's curious behavior at the time, but now smiles in understanding.
