Journeys To Self And Lessons Of Other: Carlos Castaneda, Indigenismo, And The Politics Of A New Age, Ageeth Sluis
Journeys To Self And Lessons Of Other: Carlos Castaneda, Indigenismo, And The Politics Of A New Age, Ageeth Sluis
Ageeth Sluis
During the 1960s and 1970s, Carlos Castaneda’s work on shamanism introduced a large international readership to Mexico at a time when the Americas saw pronounced socio-political and cultural changes: mounting social unrest, political instability, civil rights movements, the counterculture, and the sexual and other revolutions. While heavily criticized by contemporary scholars, Castaneda's work became instrumental in the construction of an imagined Mexico, which, in addition to drawing counterculture tourists, featured new ways of conceptualizing race and gender. Seeking to understand the Castaneda phenomenon within a larger transnational context, the study sheds light on how new conceptions of indigenous identity informed …

"Even We Can't Prevent Forests: The Chemical War And The Illusion Of Control", Edwin Martini
"Even We Can't Prevent Forests: The Chemical War And The Illusion Of Control", Edwin Martini
Edwin A. Martini
By exploring tactical and strategic uses of chemical agents beyond Agent Orange and the other ‘Rainbow Herbicides’ used as part of Operation Ranch Hand during the Vietnam War, this essay seeks to fill a gap in our under- standing of the chemical war waged by the United States in South-east Asia, and to make a contribution to the growing body of literature devoted to the intersections of military and environmental history. Taking seriously the roles played by both human and non-human actors, it explores how the White House and Pentagon continually attempted, unsuccessfully, to impose more stringent forms of control …

Washington. The camp provided recreational, crafts, sports and other activities for the youth. In 1971 the camp was transferred to the control of the West Virginia State College and in 1978 to the West Department of Culture and History, which ended it traditional mission. Reforming The Organisation Of The Islamic Conference? Implications For Religious Dialogue And Political Pluralism In Southeast Asia, R. Ferguson
R. James Ferguson
Extract:
Islamic politics remains at the centre of international relations in the early 21st century, with important implications for regional processes in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eurasian-Central Asian affairs. One mechanism for the aspirations of states with Muslim majorities and communities is the OIC, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, now with 57 members and several observers. The OIC also has organisational linkages with NAM (the Non-Aligned Movement), the UN, the League of Arab States, the Economic Cooperation Organisation, the AU (African Union) and indirectly with ASEAN. Likewise, the MNLF (Moro National Liberation Front) and Turkish Cyprus secured …

Idaho’S 'Aryan' Education: Martin Luther King, Jr., Day And Racial Politics, Jill Gill
Jill K. Gill
Idaho was among the nation's last states to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his human rights work with a paid state holiday. Given Idaho's media-made reputation as a haven for white supremacists, this delay likely surprises few readers. Ironically, however, those supremacists induced the holiday's adoption in 1990.

"Incinerating Agent Orange: Operations Pacer Ho, Pacer Ivy, And The Global Legacies Of The Chemical War, Edwin Martini
"Incinerating Agent Orange: Operations Pacer Ho, Pacer Ivy, And The Global Legacies Of The Chemical War, Edwin Martini
Edwin A. Martini
Most studies of Agent Orange to date focus either on the wartime use of herbicides or the long-term consequences of that use after the war was over. Lost in that narrative gap is the story of what happened to the 2.4 million gallons of Agent Orange still in possession of the U.S. military after its use had been banned in 1971. In addressing this surplus supply during Operations Pacer IVY and Pacer HO, the U.S. Air Force was forced to navigate a host of new challenges that had sprung up in the decade since the start of the war in …

Screech Owls: The Familia Of Roy Macgregor’S Narratives On Hockey, Don Morrow
Screech Owls: The Familia Of Roy Macgregor’S Narratives On Hockey, Don Morrow
Donald Morrow
Roy MacGregor is perhaps the most prolific of Canadian writers to use hockey as the subtext and text for his writing. His most well-known work, The Home Team: Fathers, Sons, and Hockey, succinctly, is an intimate portrait of the father-son bond in and through the game of hockey. More sweeping in national scope and significance of hockey is Home Game: Hockey and Life in Canada which MacGregor co-authored with hockey legend Ken Dryden. Least well known, though acclaimed by academics to be one of the very best novels on sport, is The Last Season. The latter is a poignant description …

When we travel back in time to meet the 89rs, what is the best we can get for our trouble? James Madison would remind us that we can get methods, not answers. The constitution may be a machine, but is not a vending machine.

Eating Smoke: Fire In Urban America, 1800-1950, Mark Tebeau
Eating Smoke: Fire In Urban America, 1800-1950, Mark Tebeau
Mark Tebeau
During the period of America's swiftest industrialization and urban growth, fire struck fear in the hearts of city dwellers as did no other calamity. Before the Civil War, sweeping blazes destroyed more than $200 million in property in the nation's largest cities. Between 1871 and 1906, conflagrations left Chicago, Boston, Baltimore, and San Francisco in ruins. Into the twentieth century, this dynamic hazard intensified as cities grew taller and more populous, confounding those who battled it. Firefighters' death-defying feats captured the popular imagination but too often failed to provide more than symbolic protection. Hundreds of fire insurance companies went bankrupt …
