In the summer of 1893 financial panic struck Colorado. The price of silver, in a protracted downward spiral since the conclusion of the Civil War, finally crashed. The British government announced that its Indian mints were ceasing the coinage of silver rupees. The news of that decision caused a torrent of selling on the international market. In a matter of hours, the price of silver plummeted from eighty cents to sixty-four cents an ounce. The collapse in value of Colorado's most important commodity precipitated runs on local banks. Records, a Falmouth Democrat, writes of his reaction to the newly-founded Republican Party in his 31 March 1860 letter. Major General Leonidas Polk writes from Columbus 9 September 1861, telling of the occupation of this Mississippi River town by Confederate troops. Also, photocopies of census records.

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 229. Photocopies of two letters by Barry while serving as Postmaster General under President Andrew Jackson. Letter 27 November 1832 to James K. Polk relates to mail service in Tennessee. Letter 7 February 1833 to Martin Van Buren concerns national politics. The bulk of the collection is research material, including other correspondence, that was typed or hand copied by J.F. Kany for the master’s thesis he wrote on Barry in 1934.

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

This thesis demonstrates how the Truman and Eisenhower administrations sought to avoid direct intervention in Indochina and halt the spread of communism at the same time. This purpose is achieved through careful analysis of primary and secondary sources, with a particular focus on the primary documentation found in Foreign Relations of the United States: 1952-1954. Through examination of these day-by-day recordings and memos, the futility of pursuing the two conflicting aims becomes clear.
