Latimer to Caroline Garrett reporting the death and burial of her brother, George King, in Cuba; and to Caroline Garrett from another brother, John, discussing tensions with Mexico.

She records her experiences while living in Scotland, where her father was serving as consul, from 1862 to 1864. She also describes her travel through several European countries and her return to the United States in 1864, when the family spent a year in San Francisco.
