The mining operation at Picher, Oklahoma was the last successful strike in the Tri-State Area. The Picher Lead Company of Joplin was drilling prospect holes in an isolated farming area somewhere northeast of Commerce, Oklahoma in 1914 and made a rich strike in the area that became known as Picher. The town grew almost overnight as miners and their families flooded into the area to be a part of one of the most successful mines in the area.
